Sky win rights for SPFL football.

The problem with Scottish football is there’s too many clubs wanting a slice of a small pie.  Killie will only have large attendances 4 times a season, same as the sheep. Imagine a neutral watching the sheep vs Dundee in a stadium with about 3000 fans?    Never happening.   Scottish football needs a whole revamp. Too many clubs, not enough fans and not enough money.

This all stems from Roger Mitchell’s decision to reject Sky in favour of his own pie-in-the sky SPL TV channel which never got off the ground. Lex Gold then took a gamble on the Setanta TV deal, confidently stating that it wouldn’t lead to collapse like ITV Digital. Well we all know what happened there.

Sky stepped in to bail us out and we’ve been playing with the weaker hand in negotiations ever since.

Definitely agree with what you're saying on the past deals. However we now have both sky and bt with a share of our games. They've both gone mental in the past trying to outbid each other for various sports TV rights. The fact that we couldn't transform that situation into a better deal says a lot about how the Scottish game is valued.

Shite deal aye but people really need to stop comparing us with other leagues especially the EPL which is watched and supported all over the world. We play in a diddy 1* league that most Scots can't even be arsed with.

It’s fair to compare us with other diddy leagues and it doesn’t compare well

The EFL (Championship) has just announced a deal worth £595m.

Almost 6 x the SPFL one.

The Championship hasnt its the EFL the £600 million is split between the 72 clubs. Championship clubs will get a bigger share but the deal is for the full football league.

It is what it is.

Scottish football has made absolutely NO attempt over the years to improve the set up.

We have plastic pitches, unfinished stadia, ignorance of fan culture, embedded bitterness and general laziness by the authorities.  Scottish football is only getting what it deserves after years and years of incompetence and mis-management.

They thought they could sit back, let things continue to go downhill - yet expect a bumper tv deal ??  Their arrogance is astounding.

Think it’s a good deal in fairness. Decent money and as another poster said need to stop comparing ourselves to the EPL.

A lot of the tv deals across comparable leagues are slightly higher due to the actual numbers shown which is far higher to the 48 agreed with Sky.

If clubs got more money but more games were shown people wouldn’t be happy with too different kick off times.

Of course our away games will be moved but it’s still satisfying to know that the majority of our home games will still be 3pm Saturday kick off like the rest of the clubs in the country.

This is surely the benefit to the actual paying fan and clubs still get a decent amount from the tv deal.

A proper highlights package is more important than the live games currently in my opinion.

correct.

If the energy used to attack us was used positively to improve the overall package we would all be a lot better off .

When the product improves .the TV investment goes up exponentially. then the product improves again.

There was a marked decline in over all quality when setanta went bust .and out tv deal went with it .All of a sudden the lower leagues were more appealing financially to players so they left .

The year after the setanta collapse over 70 players left the SPL for lower English league teams .only to be replaced by players at a level below what had left

I also think this rule about limiting our home games is pretty poor. Every time we play Hearts, Aberdeen & Hibs it should be televised. These along with the games against the filth are the showcase games for our league but half of them don't even get shown.

Recently we had Hearts at home, with no live tv coverage, whereas shortly after that we had us away at Hamilton on a plastic pitch with an empty end (sometimes has a double decker bus behind it) and a 'stand' which is no more than a glorified gazebo.  We really don't help ourselves to promote and showcase the game in Scotland.

50,000 at a rocking Ibrox against the team at the top or an away game on a plastic pitch at Hamilton in an unfinished 'stadium' in front of about 4,000.  Madness.
