We now have "4 quality forwards to work with"

When talking about Defoe, Stevie G said to Rangers TV that "we now have 4 quality forwards".

Clearly he meant:

Morelos, Lafferty and Defoe.

Who is the 4th? Does he mean a returning Murphy? Is he including Kent, Candeias or Middleton?

Or is this a big up for a returning Hardie??

We’ve tried certain things.

Jermain gives us the option of playing two up front, whether that be 4-4-2, a diamond, 3-5-2… it gives us that luxury. Kyle also does that we can go with a target man and a smaller guy around him.

Ryan Hardie has come into the picture. It has been nice to work with four quality forwards.

We haven’t had that luxury so that’s been really nice and a big positive.

We should have 3 experienced and 1 development/ youth type forward in our 1st team squad. Said that for long enough.

Happy for now with the 3 we have plus Hardie. If Hardie goes back out then I'd hope we bring our best youth not on loan into the squad.

Hardie should be the end all the Shankland talk surely.

Shankland if signed would most likely need loaned back to Ayr for the rest of the season as part of the deal. Come summer he'd then be ours whilst Hardie would be out of contract....

Interesting one whether he'd be an upgrade as 4th choice striker next season. Potentially hinders Ruddens chances of progressing too if either of them are here next season.

The definition of 'quality' in the context of SG's statement could be quite elastic.   There is no way Hardie is at present of comparable quality to Morelos or Defoe, but he may have the potential to reach or better that level of quality over time.   Lafferty is not, imo, anywhere near the same level of quality striker as Morelos or Defoe either......and that's after having been given a lot of opportunity to bag goals.     In his case he needs to live up to the 'quality' billing gifted to him by SG by doing what strikers are primarily on the books to do...…..score goals.    In his case to take a lot more of the goal scoring chances presented to him when he is selected to play.

A basic view of 'quality' as far as strikers are concerned is, for me, prolific goals scoring on a consistent basis season after season.   When that happens a truer label of 'quality' is appropriate.   Until then its just talking up potential quality.   It's for the strikers live up to the billing they get as 'quality' by scoring enough goals this season to win the league.

On the one hand maybe SG's public messaging is to talk up the quality aspect to boost players' confidence and on the other hand to throw down a challenge to the strikers of 'go prove it'.
