Eye Broke

Recommended Posts

Came across this map dating from 1800. Amazing how some names of the area have changed.

Bellahouston was BillyHouston

Ibrox was Eye Broke (broke maybe meaning Brook/Burn?)

Broomloan.......... stays!

Are there any historians who can explain what some of the older names meant please?

The name Ibrox comes from the Gaelic for 'badger's set'.

Indeed, it is. Had we started there maybe we'd play in black and white. 😁

The bit labelled 'EyeBroke' has been known as Ibrox for a long, long time. Which makes me think whoever made the map is at it ('EyeBroke' = always broke?, as per 'aye ready')

The other thing that makes me think it's doctored is that it's Bellyhouston on old maps, not Billy. Tims at work.

There still is a bellahouston right next to it.

Think there were actually two references  right next to each other on old maps mate. But it was Bellyhouston and Old Bellyhouston.

I know cause I live nearby so I've had a rummage for maps before out of interest.

I was told by an old glasgow boy that a part of glasgow used to be called egypt. Dont think this was that long ago going by what he said. He stayed out eastend way I think and iirc it was out that way he said it was.
