Police to veto Saturday night Aberdeen game

Recommended Posts

Cops are set to pull the plug on a bid to schedule a potential powder-keg Scottish Cup clash between Aberdeen and Rangerson a Saturday night.

Record Sport can reveal the possible Pittodrie grudge match has been selected for the prime time evening slot by the SFA’s new broadcast partners Premier Sports.

Monday night’s draw set up the prospect of a mouth-watering re-run of last week’s top flight blockbuster between the two sides – so long as Steven Gerrard’s men can overcome Kilmarnock in a fifth round replay at Ibrox next week.

The Irish subscription drew up plans yesterday to beam live coverage of the quarter-final clash on Saturday March 2 – with celtic’s trip to face Hibs at Easter Road selected for a lunch-time kick-off the following day.

But that plan now looks certain to be scrapped and the matches reversed after talks involving the broadcasters and Police Scotland yesterday.

It’s believed the authorities are anxious about the potential for a repeat of the crowd trouble which shamed this fixture the last time it was selected for a Saturday night TV slot, more than 17 years ago back in January 2002.

On that night home fans spilled on to the pitch to confront Rangers supporters after Aberdeen striker Robbie Winters had been struck by a coin.

The reasoning in that article makes absolutely no sense. Stop an evening kick off going ahead for something that happened 17 years ago, even though there have been numerous evening games there since then?

We need to get past Killie first, but I can only think it's a pre-emptive to paint our fans in a bad light. Word association bingo again. Rangers fans =?

I love that the Record drag up an incident from 17 years ago and do their best to lay the blame on us.

Pathetic, the lot of them.

Brings a tear to the eye thinking about the brave sheep fans confronting the moronic Rangers Fans after brutally assaulting one of their players.

Frist things first and that's winning the replay against Kilmarnock.

Ahead of that all talk in the media about timings of games is froth devoid of substance.   Assumptions for the sake of assumptions in the guise of planning for anticipated events.  We might not prevail against Kilmarnock in which case they can play the game anytime anywhere with a resultant much smaller TV audience for a game played in a stadium with not many supporters in it.

The way things are going with refereeing decisions against us these days its possible the referee / asst refs end up sending a Rangers player or 2 off in the replay or denying us goals for spurious reasons or giving generous interpretation to Kilmarnock's tackling so that their players stay on the pitch regardless of bad tackles or they are gifted goals that should not be allowed.    There is a lot for Rangers to do yet in terms of finding enough fight and quality to win the replay, and luck in doing so by not having patently wrong refereeing decisions forced against us.    If we win the replay the Club (and the football authorities) can plan for a continuation of the war at Aberdeen.   'War' being how SG summed up in a media report the last game against Aberdeen.  Until then it should be first things first.

They never spilled onto a pitch to confront us, we weren't on the fucking pitch.

They ran along the touchline unopposed by plod and assaulted an elderly Rangers supporter standing in the Rangers end. In fact, there were rumours their casuals followed what were initially plain clothed plod running pitchside thinking an attack of our support was now on.

Then came dozens of riot polis who kettled us in our end!

Left that game at that point that night, the Mrs feared for our safety and wouldn't stay.

Can't remember how the inquiry into that incident went....

I remember the Auld guy from Harthill getting a slap and the Auld yin going Tonto , also a kid got hit.

I lived up there those days. Seen 3 riot vans full of disorder plod parked just off market street hours before the game. Actually seen the polis in them psching themselves up, warming up hitting their free hands with batons.

It was inevitable bears were getting done that night. I think if bears had jumped the wall it would have ended up a lot worse for us whilst the sheep slunk away.
