Memories of Jim Stewart

The Widow's Son

Recommended Posts

I remember him running along the byeline trying to stop a ball for a goalkick and making a balls of it. Should have been a corner to the sheep. Probably saw every domestic game he played for us and thats all I remember. Wasnt the worst , i would class hhim as average.

Remember seeing him a couple of times on visits back home.  He was a good goalie playing with a bad team (early 1980's).  Is he coaching or has he retired from the game?  Remember a shot from Charlie Nicholas going through his arms at a New Year's Day game.

Was 1st team GK coach under Walter right through until Pedro didn’t want him so he went to Forest.

His son Colin is now our GK coach.

Still makes me laugh that Pedro went on and on about hiring this local coach that he wanted even though he had Jim Stewart already on his staff but he had decided that he didn’t want him

He played in a Cup Final and there was a shot bound for the top corner. He got a fingertip to it and the ref gave a bye kick. After the game DJ commented that if he had been Jim Stewart he would have demanded a corner kick to prove how good the save had been...

Think that was more someone that worked with the full group rather than a 'specialist' like Jim.

Probably but do you not think he could easily have slotted into the role of intermediary between Pedro’s staff and the players because I always thought that’s what JJ’s role mainly ended up being.

Was there not a wee, stocky guy who was also part of the Scotland setup that was our goalkeeper coach when Smith was gaffer first time around. He seemed to get the best out of our keepers. Back on point I’d say Stewart was a better coach than keeper, tho I’ve never seen him him play in goals or coach

Yes, Alan Hodgkinson who also coached Schmeichel at Man Utd. Capped a few times for England.

Sadly died a couple of years ago.

That’s him. Didn’t know/ remember he’d died, did a fantastic job coaching.
