Shuggy 1,308
I saw that Clough documentary last night. It seems Burns started off as a striker, but Clough put him in defense and the rest is history. I doubt Rangers saw him as defender material?
BLUEDIGNITY 33,610
Was a better system in them days no matter how much money they pump into youth academies nowadays. Just about every school in Scotland had scouts aka pe teachers who did the job, they picked the cream of the crop and most had connections to senior teams north and south of the border. There was a teachers strike in the early to mid seventies after that the work they did was curtailed. And the answer to your question is in some ways we liked to pick lads from better schools so our choices were in a way limited. None was a better example than Alex MacDonald Doddie who wasnt wanted by us in his early days only to be signed later from st Johnstone for £50k, could’ve saved us a lot of money in the long run if we’d signed him the first time, the rest as they say is history. Burnbank Derry 294
Remember Kenny Burns playing for Scotland youth at For Park, early 70s. Tally was kicking every Scottish player, ended up Tally put the boot in again. Burns went for him, tally ran and Burns was chasing him all over the park. I'm sure it wasn't long after that we released him?

They signed a defender kenny burns who played for us as a youth who won two European cups kenny burns. How did we let a double European cup winner slip away and was he one of us aswell? Love that documentary, loads of anecdotes to ponder over, the genius that was Clough, how he never got the England job is mind boggling, there is the ending with MON when Cannavaro and Viera think he wasn't even a footballer and he has two European cup winners medals to their none between them... still a bastard and despise him but put the fancy dans in their place
