Sampdoria have officially announced the signing of Real Madrid striker Antonio Cassano on a season loan.

The fiery ex-Roma hitman has struggled to adapt to life in La Liga since leaving the Giallorossi in the summer of 2006 and had been widely tipped to return to the peninsula in search of regular football.

While Napoli were early favourites for the Bari-born star’s signature, they were reportedly put off by his wage demands.

However, after intense negotiations, Sampdoria have agreed a compromise with the Spanish champions that will see El Pibe de Bari link up with fellow ex-Roma striker Vincenzo Montella.

Samp's club website issued a statement welcoming Cassano to the club late on Tuesday night.

The Genovese side have made an initial payment of around £800,000 to Real with the 25-year-old accepting a pay cut to an annual salary of £340,000.

Cassano is due to arrive at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and undertake a medical examination on Friday, but he is officially a Sampdoria player.
