Vogts was a mistake: David Taylor

Former Scottish FA chief executive David Taylor has admitted the appointment of Berti Vogts as Scotland manager was the wrong one.

The German had two unsuccessful years in charge of Scotland between 2002 and 2004.

Taylor, who is now general secretary of Uefa, accepts it was a mistake to choose Vogts as Craig Brown's successor rather than go with another Scot.

"I liked Berti personally, and with Eriksson taking over at England it seemed a foreign coach might not be as much of an issue," Taylor told Uefa's publication Champions.

Culture

"We asked people in the game and they all said we had to get the best man for the job, not the best Scot.

"With hindsight, we under-estimated how difficult it was for a foreigner to integrate with our football culture.

"Some football cultures are just too tight-knit for that to be done easily and Scottish football is one of those cultures."

The good thing to come out of Vogts reign was that he gor shot of all the dead wood, the likes of Neil Sullivan and Tom Boyd types that appointing another Scot may have felt inclined to include. We now have the youngest squad, certainly of my generation, being picked for Scotland with a great potential, and an evergrowing reputation. How much credit Vogts takes for this will always be open to discussion.
