Bruges close in on Thomas Buffel deal

Jun 2 2008

CLUB BRUGES were lining up a deal last night to take Rangers misfit Thomas Buffel back to Belgium.

The midfielder, who played in only five of the 68 games contested by Walter Smith's side last season, is contracted to the Ibrox club until 2009.

However, Buffel's agent Kees Ploegsma insists Bruges have made an enquiry.

Ploegsma said: "Rangers are willing to negotiate if a club comes in for Thomas and Bruges have shown an interest.

"As yet, there have been no serious talks and Thomas still thinks Rangers are a fantastic club.

"But he wants to play as much football as he can."

he isnt going to play so we might as well sell him but we better get some money for him. Amazes me that we wont play someone as talented as buffel but we are willing to waste money on someone who runs around like a headless chicken and has sod all talent.

Sad one, hoped to see more of him at the tail end of the season, perhaps putting him in instaed of the dead weight like dailly we may have had more joy up front. All the best to him tho

A good player to have, but if he isn't in the Managers plans then there is no point having him around. I'd let him go.

Never rated him. Had the skill but not the pace and strength to cope with the demands of Scottish Football.

Sure about that?

I'm sad he never got a shot, but it's clearly time to go. Had we played him, we'd have had at least one more trophy, in my opinion.

However, time to move on.

Norwich are after Rangers midfielder Thomas Buffel, according to press reports.

This morning's The People newspaper has a new name for Norwich fans to get excited about - Thomas Buffel.

Buffel, 27, joined Glasgow giants Rangers in 2005 in a £2.5million deal from Dutch side Feyenoord. The attacking midfielder had fallen out with coach Ruud Gullit after refusing to sign a new deal after three years at the club, during which time he scored 34 goals in 90 appearances.

The Belgian international, who has six goals in his 24 appearances for his country, hit five goals in his first season in Scotland despite only featuring 18 times, and helped Rangers to a League and League Cup double.

Buffel has been linked with moves to several clubs away from Ibrox, notably Hannover 96 in the German Bundesliga. Since suffering a serious knee injury in February last year he has fund his first team appearances under Walter Smith limited.

Norwich boss Glenn Roeder is said to be keen on Buffel, who began his career with Excelsior, and he can be added to a lengthy list of proposed transfer targets, with nobody yet having been confirmed as the first new signing of the summer.

One of those, Newcastle's young striker Andy Carroll, is said this morning to be interesting Derby County, whose manager Paul Jewell has completed seven signings already this summer.

Sunderland's Ian Harte, available on a free transfer and twice linked with a switch to Carrow Road, is again said to be intersting East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys' flirtation with Newcastle's Shola Ameobi, also admired by Roeder, is looking likely to be hijacked by Premier League new boys Hull City.

The Tigers' manager Phil Brown is said to be preparing a bid for the 26-year-old of around £2million. Toon chairman Mike Ashley is known to be keen to cash in on the striker, deemed surplus to requirements by Kevin Keegan.

Belgian club Germinal Beerschot have confirmed their interest in Rangers midfielder Thomas Buffel.

The Belgium international has a year remaining on his contract with Rangers, but they are ready to let him leave.

Germinal vice-president Herman Kesters said: "We have spoken with Thomas Buffel's agent. Thomas is a player who can help our team.

"We have let him know our offer. In the coming days, it should become clear whether a move here is possible."

Buffel has interested several clubs in Germany and has also been linked with Norwich City, but a return to his home country could now happen.

Kesters is aware the club could lose out if one of the Bundesliga sides looking at Buffel make a move for the 27-year-old former Feyenoord player.

"Buffel must first decide if a team such as Germinal Beerschot is suitable for his future," said Germinal's vice-president.

"If a German team comes in with lots of money, it becomes difficult for us.

"We are still looking down other routes, but we certainly want to talk with Buffel again."

Buffel joined Rangers in 2005 but has rarely featured since Walter Smith took over as manager, making just five appearances in the season just passed.
