Frankie 505
First and foremost we lack genuine creativity mainly because we played far too many games with a defensive outlook last season. Secondly, I think we lack genuine belief in our ability. Despite some great results last season we still failed to go on and win the league. Again, our defensive outlook may impact on our self-confidence but I keep waiting on players stepping forward, pushing out their chest and saying 'I'm better than you'. Sometimes we are capable of that and when it happens its incredible to watch. More often though we seem to retreat into our shells and don't win personal battles. As such what we also need is strong leadership and responsibility. Every player/staff member can provide this but we need Barry Ferguson and Walter Smith especially to lead from the front. Let's stop complaining about fixtures, niggling injuries and the like. Let's stand up and show we're the best. We're not far away from being a decent side. The above qualities would aid in that quest.

The above qualities would aid in that quest. Following on from that, the addition of a couple of creative signings could (and in my view) would assist in this mentality, by removing some of the burden from Barry. He came in for some real criticism last term, some warranted - some not, but I sympathised as he was asked to be the second striker more often than not which hindered any creativity he had. I know there is sense in flexibility but I would love to sign players that specialise in one position. An attacking Full Back, a Winger , an Attacking Midfielder etc and allow players to play in their natural positions. When players are comfortable in where they play and whats expected of them - they are more likely to impose themselves. This trend of CF's Wide Left, and CM's playing Wide Right for me is what lets this side down.
Frankie 505
Agreed JR. I certainly criticised Ferguson often enough last season but he was wasted in the free role he was often utilised in and of course too much expectation was placed on his shoulders as a result. That, as well as his injuries and questionable attitude, explains his average contribution. As for having too many 'versatile' players, again that is true. Because we've had financial worries in recent years, obviously players have been bought on that basis to maximise value for money. Why buy 2 players when you can buy 1? That's understandable. However, last season we spent £12million and this season it looks as if we may spend a similar amount. So far we bought 3 strikers. They should play as strikers - not as wingers and not in deeper roles. Any other money we spend should be on strengthening the areas of the team in a specific sense. It's good to have a team ethic but sometimes winning sides need that one or two individuals who make the difference. We lack that IMO.

Yep I'm happy with the thinking by Walter with the recent signings - if not entirely happy with his chosen personnel. I agree that they should be strikers - Velicka certainly, but reports that Lafferty "can play wide left" fill me with the dread of more tinkering. Signing type-specialised Wide players or Attacking Mids would relieve that dread
