Exclusive: Walter Smith tells Kris Boyd that he's major part of Rangers' plans

Jun 22 2008 Exclusive By Mark Guidi And Scott Mcdermott

WALTER SMITH has told Kris Boyd he wants him to stay at Rangers - and guaranteed the striker a major role in his new-look side.

Boyd is being chased by Championship outfit Cardiff who are expected to increase the s2.5million offer they had rejected on Friday night.

The Scotland star does not want to leave Ibrox despite the arrival of three new hitmen and feels he can help Gers win the SPL and make an impact in the Champions League next season.

Boss Smith shares that view and held a heart-to-heart with the player to assure him he will be a key man. The Gers gaffer knows Boyd guarantees at least 25 goals a season and won't authorise his sale.

A source close to Boyd told MailSport: "Kris thought he may have to leave but has been assured he is in the manager's plans and is delighted because quitting Rangers is the last thing he wants.

"Kris can now focus on helping Rangers and improving his own game.

"The past few days have been unsettling but he now knows the situation and is happy the gaffer wants him."

It is more likely Daniel Cousin will be offloaded for around s2.5million and Jean-Claude Darcheville may also be heading for the exit.

Rangers have spent more than s6m in the past week to land Kenny Miller, Andrius Velicka and Kyle Lafferty.

But rather than being surplus to requirements, Boyd will be given the chance to partner Miller up front, particularly in home games.

Darcheville's future is now in real doubt yet he insists he'll still be at Ibrox next term to fight for a starting slot.

The Frenchman said: "The fact Rangers have signed three strikers doesn't worry me - it excites me.

"If we can strengthen all positions we'll have a strong squad and at a big club you need competition for places.

"I love Rangers and am settled here. I don't want to leave."

Meanwhile, Gers have snubbed three SPL clubs who want Alan Gow - despite trying to flog him to Burnley as part of the Lafferty deal.

Dundee United, Motherwell and Aberdeen have all made enquiries but Ibrox chiefs would rather sell the 25-year-old to England.

Gow will return for preseason training on Thursday but his future lies away from Ibrox and several Championship clubs could move in.

RANGERS chairman David Murray has offered £9million-rated keeper Allan McGregor a bumper new contract to STAY at Ibrox.

Sport of the World can reveal the pair held top secret talks in Edinburgh in the last 48 hours, to keep the highly-rated No1 in Glasgow on a new long-term deal worth around £16,000 a week.

And the word from inside Ibrox is that McGregor could sign within the next couple of days to kill off months of speculation about his future.

The sensational news of Murray’s swoop will dismay Mac’s many admirers down south, most notably Spurs and Newcastle, who saw the 26-year-old Scot as the answer to their goalkeeping problems.

It had been rumoured McGregor was set to tell Gers he wanted to try his luck in the Premiership — just nine months into his new contract — to escape constant scrutiny into his private life.

Now Rangers’ clear signal they intend to hang onto one of their biggest assets could convince McGregor he should stay.

White Hart Lane boss Juande Ramos had targeted the talented Gers No1 as the ideal replacement for Middlesbrough-bound Paul Robinson as he looked to build on League Cup success.

And Toon gaffer Kevin Keegan saw him as the ideal replacement for Shay Given, who could be on the verge of a move to Arsenal.

Both Manchester bosses, Sir Alex Ferguson and Mark Hughes, are also known to be big fans of the keeper.

However Murray’s sudden offer could leave them all standing after Walter Smith made it clear to his chairman he wanted to build his new-look team around defensive rocks McGregor and Carlos Cuellar.

An Ibrox insider told Sport of the World: “Rangers see Allan and Carlos Cuellar as a huge part of their plans.

“Some players will leave to balance the books but Walter Smith and Ally McCoist are determined to try and hold onto the players they regard as outstanding.

“Allan certainly comes into that category due to his form last season, particularly in Europe.

“His performance against Bremen took his game to a new level and Walter simply doesn’t want to lose him.â€

McGregor still has two years left of his £12,000-a-week deal, but Gers bosses want to double that period and secure him until 2012 at least.

McGregor joined Rangers in 1998 and has now made more than a century of club appearances.

Is McGregor stays, does that mean Cuellar goes?

It's also a fly trick yet again by Willie McKay to have his client say he wants away. It means we give him a bumper new deal to stay on or, if the worst should happen, we sell him to the likes of Spurs for even more wages. Why do we even deal with this fat greasy c*nt?

No Ferguson should be on the same as them

£16k a week is more than enough.

Break it down .£800 a week mortgage

£200 food

£70 a week petrol

£14,930 on roulette,black jack,condoms and gimp masks.

Dont know how true this is but if it is then where does this leave our £3.5m+ man, Kyle Lafferty?

Boyd will be given the chance to partner Miller up front

You dont leave a guy that cost this much on the bench and you dont play him out wide left. I have a feeling Smith will use him on the left which will be completely pointless and a waste of money.

If he's not playing him on the left, then he must think that he's got some work to do, and that he's payed that money because he believes he could go for at least double that in a few years?
