McCLELLAND TAKES UP ECA ROLE

Rangers director John McClelland has been appointed as a vice-chairman of the European Club Association.

A day after naming a 15-man board at its inaugural general assembly at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, the ECA appointed Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as its chairman.

McClelland was joined as one of three vice-chairmen by AC Milan's Umberto Gandini and Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

Michel Centenaro moves over from the UEFA competitions department to take over the role as general secretary.

Laporta said his role would be to strengthen the clubs' relationship with UEFA and FIFA and the European Union.

"It's vital that the clubs have a role in the decision-making process of football," he said.

"We must have a better calendar in terms of releasing players for national teams and avoid too many friendlies."

McClelland joins other vice-chairmen, AC Milan director Umberto Gandini and Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

The ECA was formed following the dissolution of the G-14 group and currently represents 103 members,

McClelland briefly held the post of chairman at Ibrox when Sir David Murray took a break from the role between 2002 and 2004.

McClelland Appointed To ECA Board

By Andrew Dickson

RANGERS director John McClelland has been appointed as one of three vice-chairmen of the European Club Association.

Formed in January, the ECA is the independent body representing football clubs at European level and it has 103 member teams.

At the organisation's inaugural assembly yesterday in Nyon, also attended by Ibrox chief executive Martin Bain, McClelland was voted as one of its 11 executive board members.

Having been with the club for almost eight years, he was nominated by Rangers to represent the club and to continue his involvement in the former European club forum.

McClelland will also act as one of a trio of vice-chairmen along with AC Milan's Umberto Gandini and Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

German legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the current chairman of Bayern Munich, will head the group.

The ECA aims to strengthen clubs' relationships with UEFA, FIFA and the European Union following its foundation at the start of the year.

Bain said: "I am delighted the club - and indeed the work put in by John McClelland in this forum - has been recognised with a board appointment."

Over the past few years many people, including me, have been hammering SDM for not responding to the attacks on Rangers. Is this appointment, as well as being awarded a community service citation, the result of SDM,s work behind the scenes in quietly counteracting the demonising of Rangers?

Just a thought, no proof, but two awards for recognition at the same time is unusual. Maybe the tide is turning and SDM was ahead of us all along. Anybody else think so?

No way to tell really, but I'm sure there are things going on away from the public eye that we'll never know about. None of us are privy to the day-to-day workings of the club at that level, although some would like us to think they are! ;)

I think what this appointment shows is that, although we play in a small league in a small country, we are still regarded as giants in the world of football. Rangers Football Club is well and truly among the top movers and shakers in the game, and those Bears who like to constantly tell us we're on the slippery slope to obscurity can't deny it without looking ever-so-slightly ridiculous.

We Are The People and we always will be! :rangers::rangers::rangers:

Murray should apply for a job with Jim Henson, the number of puppets he's supposed to have!

Btw, puppet is a funny word. Say it 5 times, and look at it. Doesn't even look English, does it? Is the word 'puppet' a Murray puppet? I think we shoud be told.
