John The Mark

From Andrew Dickson in Lotte

JOHN FLECK scored his first top-team goal for Rangers as they came from behind to beat German fourth-tier outfit Sportfreunde Lotte 3-1 this evening.

The 16-year-old fired home the clincher to provide a talking point at the end of an otherwise low-key Light Blues performance.

Hosts Lotte had taken an early lead through Dennis Rommel and their SPL opponents struggled to come up with a response at first.

But two goals in a minute from Kris Boyd turned the game on its head before Fleck knocked in the third to keep Gers' 100 per cent pre-season record up.

Walter Smith's men were poor in the first half and Lotte took advantage of that as they went in front after just five minutes.

Comeback man Andy Webster was at fault as he let in home striker Rommel and he coolly slotted the ball under keeper Graeme Smith.

The visitors tried to hit back but it said much that teenager Fleck, playing on the left of midfield, was the most likely to score.

He had three good chances in the opening period but saw his half-volley and low drive saved and a curling effort drift just wide.Andy Webster

Boyd also came close with a scissor kick from Nacho Novo's cross while Lee McCulloch and Kevin Thomson sent attempts soaring over the upright.

Lotte had opportunities too and could even have led by more goals than they did at the break.

Smith dropped a cross but Florian Dondorf somehow failed to convert on the line and the keeper then redeemed himself with fine stops from the same man and Rommel.

Rangers were eager to get going when play resumed after the interval but they were hit with the unlikeliest of hold-ups.

With both teams in formation and ready to restart, they had to wait until a local dance troup to complete a lengthy routine they were doing in the middle of the pitch.

Once that finished, Gers finally started to play with confidence and Daniel Cousin struck only to see his goal wrongly ruled offside.

Boyd made up for that with a quickfire double, his first a tap-in after Novo was stopped by German goalie Andre Poggenborg once he had skipped past two men.

The second was easier on the eye as Cousin played Boyd in and he finished well by lifting over Poggenborg with the inside of his right foot.

The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Fleck, who added gloss to the result in the final few minutes.

Debutant Andrius Velicka, on as a substitute, laid off to him on the edge of the area and his low grasscutter left Poggenborg with no chance.
