  4. Multi-millionaire businessman David Gold last night dismissed the Old Firm as a busted flush — and explained why he would have no interest in buying into Rangers. The Ibrox club are the subject of fevered speculation as David Murray and Lloyds Banking Group wrestle with debts of £30million. Exiled Scottish businessman Dave King remains the leading contender to take over from Murray, but faces a series of tax-evasion charges in South Africa. Birmingham City's former co-owner David Gold It also emerged at the weekend that King’s78-year-old mother has a small slice of the current Ibrox shareholding, and it is believed her son has transferred assets into an offshore company in her name — which could help him mount a takeover bid. Apart from 54-year-old King in Johannesburg, however, Sportsmail understands middle men have contacted figures like former Birmingham chairman Gold across Britain and beyond to see if they are interested — but have received little encouragement. ‘It has never really crossed my mind to buy into Rangers, I must confess,’ said the veteran London-born businessman, who is desperate to return to football after selling Birmingham to Carson Yeung. ‘It does make sad reading to see the financial difficulties they are suffering from. Clearly, they are looking for someone new to come in and take on the challenge after a long tenure by Sir David Murray. Would I come to Glasgow? I have to say that I can’t speak the language and it is 500 miles from London.’ Gold, who has discussed the Old Firm’s desire to move to the English Premier League at length with Bolton chairman Phil Gartside, sees little likelihood of that door to greater TV riches opening to Rangers and Celtic. Rangers chairman David Murray ‘I think the good times are over for the Old Firm, frankly,’ said Gold, who spirited Alex McLeish away from the Scotland job to the post at St Andrew’s in November 2007. ‘Yes, they will sometimes play to packed houses at Ibrox and Celtic Park and they will still go headto- head for the SPL title. ‘But they won’t be watching the standard of player you once had. ‘I think those days are over for Scottish football and the Old Firm are having a great difficulty accepting that. It is like that moment when your girlfriend walks in and says: “It’s over”. And you look yourself in the mirror and kid yourself on that it is not.’ It was reported at the weekend that King’s mother, Agnes, is the owner of his current £1.5m stake in the club. King is still trying to avoid 322 charges from the South African tax authorities. Mrs King, a widow, lives in Dunbartonshire and is a regular at Rangers’ European games with the businessman’s sister. Meanwhile, with no serious offers having been made for the Ibrox club to date, one bold strategy being mooted by fans’ groups is broad-based fan ownership of the SPL champions. The rescue package was described as a ‘Plan B’ in the event of no outright buyer being found willing to purchase Murray’s 90-per-cent stake. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...t.html?ITO=1490
