Wrote a poem this morning about the disaster.
 
 Black Saturday, 1971
 
In the shadow of the sixties
By New Year’s dawn
The Ibrox Roar was a silent song
Ugliest of ends for the beautiful game
Beneath the heavy eyes of shipyard cranes
 
Schoolkids rushing to beat the crowd
On their Father’s shoulders, broad and proud
Singing for their heroes
Jardine and Stein
The cruelest of codas:
Just watching their team
 
Refusing to give up until the final ball
With courage, they stood
By cruel fate, they’d fall
Never admitting nor knowing defeat
The mark of a Ranger
They died on their feet
 
That infamous stairway
Of Judas lore
Where crashing cheers from a last-minute score
Turned to cries for help
From daughters and sons
Squeezing the last of the air in their lungs
 
Back home, they clung to the radio noise
Mother and sisters, praying for their boys
Through streets broad and narrow
Their hearts followed on
Not once accepting 
It was theirs who had gone.
 
While back on the pitch
The poor nameless piled
A pop-up infirmary
They lay side by side
Both sides rushing to the sick and the lame
Red, blue or green
Their blood ran the same
 
The clocks stopped that day, by the Copland Road
Etched forever in time, like that stadium of old
So remember Black Saturday, and the ones who would fall
For their souls are the bricks that built us all.
