Greig as a player was a massive hero to me but as a manager he was terrible. He over thought the game, playing away matches with the likes of St Mirren, Kilmarnock and Morton as if they were in the Bernabeu or Nou Camp. It's telling that after Rangers he didn't carry on elsewhere.

The attendances were often poor in the 70s as well, 15,000 and the like mid-season against the likes of Clydebank. It got worse in the 80s partly because we were not so good on the park, but football in general was looked on poorly by a lot of the general public due to hooliganism and the grounds were often in poor nick, not Ibrox though. I can remember Scottish Cup ties with Albion Rovers and Dumbarton in 1982 and the place seemed almost empty. When Souness came you couldn't rely on just picking and choosing your games as there were quite a few matches where people got locked out, Hamilton in 1987 for instance - 5,000 locked out and Ibrox packed, and that was the start of large-scale season ticket buying.

I was 7 at the time of that game and had to make do with watching it live on telly (a rarity in itself back then) but my favourite story of that night is one my cousin told me. His bus was on its way back to Greenock after our game and the scum match v Inter Milan was on the radio. As it went to penalties the bus was stuck in a traffic jam going into Port Glasgow and just in front was a minibus full of Bears. When Deans skied his shot over the bar you could see that bus literally rocking from side to side as everybody on it jumped over each other in celebration! Without a doubt our win that night was our greatest European win, and for me the best by any Scottish club too.

The book I took it from has it as George Young and it does look like him.

Yes, that's the one.
