No one is serious when they say that about Messi though. I would be surprised if you thought otherwise. Some people who aren't EPL fanboys would say outside the top clubs you won't get good players in the league and it's full of shite. One of the leagues best young players plays at Villa, 3 of the better keepers in the league are in the bottom half of the league (one of which is at the bottom club). The arguments made from both sides basically are just the same. Both leagues are good.

You make the same or similar arguments for La Liga as the EPL "fanboys" make for the EPL. As you say it's all about perception.

At this moment the Spanish league certainly has the majority of the worlds best players, Barca and Real in particular. Messi and Ronaldo certainly top 2. The EPL does have a few though. I would put RVP, Vidic, Cole, Mata, Saurez, Kompany and Bale in the bracket of some of the worlds best. Players such as Hazard, De Gea, Wilshere, Oscar, Benteke are young players who in the next few years could certainly step up to the world class status.
