heard it all now Mark Wright: Playing for Rangers would be a dream come true Thinks he can hack it with the big boys ... Mark Wright By MARC DEANIEPublished: 25 minutes ago 0 SOCCER-MAD Mark Wright has issued a come-and-get-me plea to fallen giants RANGERS. The Essex boy boasted he could hack it in Scotland’s bottom tier where Ally McCoist’s side are plying their trade. Mark, 25, was on the books at Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur as a teenager and now plays in defence for local amateur side Essex United. He said: “It’s a shame what’s happened to Rangers because I used to love them. “And I could definitely play in the Scottish Third Division. “I think if I got myself properly fit I could play in the lower leagues in England. I know I could if I really put my mind to it. “I’m just too busy with work to commit to football, to be honest. “But playing at Ibrox for Rangers, even getting a trial, would be a dream come true. I’d think about putting work on hold for that.” Mark’s already had a taste of football high life after playing with Vinnie Jones in his Hollywood All-Stars team in LA. His kickabout session with Lock Stock star Vinnie and a host of A-list celebs featured in Mark’s Hollywood Nights show on ITV2. He said: “To play with Vinnie was incredible — he’s a proper football legend. And what an actor too.” “Vinnie is an absolute gent. He was so polite and lovely to me. He had a chat with me, telling me about his Hollywood lifestyle, and gave me the man of the match award. “I didn’t go to his house, but he said next time I should go over and play poker.” Mark’s 22-year-old brother Josh is also a professional footballer with English Championship outfit Millwall. The telly playboy also has strong Old Firm connections. His dad — known on telly as “Big Mark” — was the agent behind Essex boy Gary Hooper’s £2.4million move to Celtic two years ago. Hooper, 24, has since gone on to become a Parkhead hero. Mark said: “Gary’s a lovely guy and I’ve known him for years. “It’s nice to see him doing really well. I’ve been up to watch him a few times which has been great. “As kids we used to play against each other and he’s turned into a great player. “At 17 or 18, I was at Spurs and making it in football was my ultimate ambition. “Gary was at a non-league team then, Grays Athletic. It’s amazing how things have turned around now.” Wright foot ... Mark playing amateur football XPOSUREPHOTOS.COM Last season Wright played briefly in January for English non-league side St Neots Town. Boss Dennis Greene denied it was a publicity stunt and insisted he hoped Wright would consider a future with them. At the time he said: “I’ve signed Mark because he’s a good footballer. “He can come in and if he likes it then we hope he’ll commit to the club long term. “At the moment his personal life is so busy it’s hard to know what his movements will be.” Mark has close links with Scotland and often ventures north to visit mates. He was lined up to host this year’s Miss Scotland finals and was gutted when he had to pull out after being invited over to Hollywood. But the ex-TOWIE hunk denies being pals with a notorious Scots gangster after he was spotted allegedly cosying up to Glasgow underworld figure Francis ‘Fraggle’ Green and ‘business associate’ Arfan Ahmed during a trip to Glasgow last November. But Wright stuttered: “Francis Green... no, I don’t know him.” He added: “I like the Scottish people and I’ve got friends up here. “Doing things like this gives me an excuse to come and see them.” Mark shot to fame on The Only Way Is Essex before finishing runner-up on I’m A Celebrity. But his Hollywood Nights series was panned by telly critics earlier this year. Mark said: “I take things like that as a sign I’m doing well. “I’m humble and stay real and that’s what I do. “It’s been an amazing few years for me and I’m having the time of my life. I’m grateful that people have helped put me on the map. “I don’t know how long it will last but I’ll work as hard as I can to make it last forever.” Mark, who was in Edinburgh for a guest slot on DJ Scott Mills’s Radio 1 Fringe show, added: “Essex is producing a lot of stars at the moment — Jessie J, the TOWIE guys, Pixie Lott and Gary Hooper. It’s an area where everyone wants to be the best.” marc.deanie@the-sun.co.uk sun
