We are sorry to hear that you were offended by comments made by Alex Thomson via Twitter. We would like to explain how this situation occurred. Whilst researching a blog about the many videos and spoof images that have been created and posted online about Rangers FC, Alex Thomson posted a link to an animated image. Alex has recently reported extensively on the Rangers story and interpreted this image in terms of the current financial woes of the club. It featured a statue of John Greig, who as you will know resigned as a Rangers director in October, 'walking away'. However, this statue was built to commemorate the 66 who died in the 1971 disaster and we now understand that some people have been offended that this animation uses that statue as part of a spoof. Furthermore, there was some confusion over his tweets which were intended to clarify the situation - he was trying to point out that he wasn't aware that this image could be interpreted in this way. To be clear, he was familiar with the memorial statue - but he did not expect the image to be interpreted as a comment on the Ibrox Disaster. Alex was very concerned that he may have tweeted something that could be interpreted as offensive, so when this was pointed out to him, he immediately deleted the tweet, and the link and issued an unreserved apology. He has since followed this apology with a more comprehensive explanation and apology here: http://blogs.channel4.com/alex-thomsons-view/rangers-apology/2041 On behalf of Channel 4 News and Alex Thomson, we would like to apologise sincerely for any offence caused. We are always grateful for feedback, so thank you for taking the time to contact us. Regards, Angie Young Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries
