TinyPaedoLikesTinyPeople
Inside the computer there are pins with jumpers on it which look likethis. maybe one of those has come loose and somehow fell off. IF NOT Then , your hard-drive has gone listen with the side of the case off to hear if there is any movement from the hdd. If it's spinning then it's not that, there is a battery on the motherboard which is used in watches take that out for 30 seconds and then place it back in and start up the computer , If still no change then it's goosed i'm afraid

Kelta
it sounds like the boot file is corrupt. you need to boot from the windows xp cd and ener recovery mode. this will give you command prompt access to the os. once in there type "fixboot c:" and restart. if that doesn't work then load the recover console again from the xp disk again and type "fixmbr" and follow the instuctions. if you get back into windows do a virus scan with the best anti-virus you can get - i recommend nod32 as well as superantispyware. look here for help - http://pirules.com/xp_recovery_console.aspx and word of warning about the jumpers, only use them to clean the cmos if it becomes corrupt, it will explain this in your motherboard manual. more importnantly do not swap the jumpers while your computer on as it will delete your bios (meaning new motherboard).
