disgruntled_bear
Rangers stars Kris Boyd and Barry Ferguson will feel the pinch come summer contract negotiations — as the credit crunch hits hard at Ibrox. Sir David Murray announced half yearly losses of £4.1million on Friday following the disastrous early European exit to FBK Kaunas last August. Rangers only reveal debts in their annual accounts because, unlike Celtic, they are not a full public limited company, and the last debt figure was around £22million. Kris Boyd could be offered a lower wage by Rangers if and when they discuss a new deal But Murray claimed that the current squad was ‘unsustainable’ and underlined how tightening belts will mean cuts to Walter Smith’s squad, with a greater emphasis on youth. ‘There is not an individual in Britain today who is not aware of the economic situation in every business or walk of life — be it football, property, steel, travel or whatever,’ said Murray. ‘Every person is making their own economic audit and Rangers are no different. 'We have made it clear that a 28-man first-team squad is unsustainable and, having invested heavily in Murray Park, we have to make it work for us from now on.’ Rangers claimed in January that a sale was required to balance the books, before Boyd rejected a £4m move to Alex McLeish’s Birmingham. It is still unclear how Murray will address that shortfall, but it is patently obvious that skipper Ferguson and top goalscorer Boyd, who are out of contract in the summer of 2010, will face crucial financial decisions come June. Barry Ferguson Feeling the pinch: Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson If Rangers decide to offer Boyd a new deal, there is liable to be no significant pay increase on the table. And Ferguson’s wages have already been dropping year-on year from the Premiership-style salary he enjoyed when he first returned from Blackburn. Turnover for the six months to December 31 is down by £12.9m to £20.1m — a direct consequence of lost European revenue. The £4.1m loss compares to a £2.3m profit this time last year, made all the harder to bear with Celtic having posted profits of £8.6m for the same six months. ‘The absence of European competition, together with the economic downturn, has confirmed that the size of the squad was neither sustainable from a financial nor football management point of view,’ said Murray yesterday. ‘It is our aim to rationalise the squad to a more manageable level going forward and integrate the young talent now emerging from Murray Park.’ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...d-Ferguson.html

the goal machine
they both deserve a wage cut as they dont deserve a 1/16th of what they are on let the typical Boyd thread start Ferguson maybe but Boyd? 24 goals in 30 games deserves £12,000 a week in the current football climate. ManchestGer
Ferguson would probably gladly take a wage cut if it means he gets to stay at Ibrox, not sure about Boyd though if he's asked to take a wage cut and another big bid from England comes in I can see him accepting it this time round. simplythebest
they both deserve a wage cut as they dont deserve a 1/16th of what they are on let the typical Boyd thread start I'm past having opinions on what wages players deserve or not, at the end of the day football is just an over paid game. I'm sure Ferguson and Boyd will take the wage cuts.

For what he does, we can't afford to pay for a better striker. We'd never get a player that puts the ball away like he does for £400k..
