Clydesdale Bank Premier League Gers Fan Furyas Celts Hit Top Smith: Punters Right To Jeer Us After Ian's Goal

RANGERS 0

INVERNESS CT 1

RAGING Walter Smith last night told the Rangers support they were right to slaughter his team for losing to Inverness Caley Thistle last night.

The Ibrox side were knocked off the top of the SPL by Terry Butcher's team, which had started the night at the foot of the table - but their 1-0 victory lifted them above Falkirk.

Rangers were booed off the pitch by the near-49,000 crowd and Smith had no complaints about the stick his players took on a night when they had hardly a shot on target and lost to an injury-time Ian Black penalty.

To compound a horror night, Smith saw Davie Weir sent off by referee Calum Murray for giving away the spot kick with a foul on David Proctor.

Smith had no gripe with the decision but was furious with his team's performance.

He said: "There is nothing more disappointing than losing the game and the manner in which we played.

"The crowd deserved to get at the players. There are times when it is hard to play here and we have a crowd that is sometimes hard to please.

"But when you play as we did in the first half when you are going for the championship, they are right to express displeasure.

"It was disappointing in the sense that we didn't play as well as we have done in the majority of games this season.

"I have no complaints about the penalty. There were no great complaints from the players."

Celtic lead the table by three points and Smith knows they have to slip up if Rangers are to stop them winning four in a row.

He added: "There have to be twists and turns now and that's the disappointing thing.

"We had faced a couple of difficult matches, including away to Hamilton on Saturday and negotiated that well, so that makes this more disappointing, especially as our approach in the first half was too casual.

"Second half we huffed and puffed but when you have that amount of possession and are not good enough to create any clear-cut opportunities then you have to look at yourself.

"It's disappointing to drop points anywhere, never mind at home."

Butcher was as thrilled as Smith was angry. The Caley Thistle boss has transformed the Highlanders' fortunes in only six games but admitted he didn't expect to leave Ibrox as a winner.

He said: "The players did themselves proud. Rangers must have had a talking to at half-time because they came out quicker in the second half.

"We found it harder to keep the ball and Rangers had a lot of possession but didn't really create that much.

"If you'd said before the game that we'd take three points and be off the foot of the table I'd have said you'd had too much gin.

"But the more the game went on the more I felt Rangers looked edgy because they were not getting the breakthrough.

"It means a hell of a lot to our club. It will lift everybody, there will be pizzas galore on the bus home, Lucozade for the players and we might even stop off and get some juice for ourselves."

Butcher admitted he was about to slaughter Lionel Djebi-Zadi for not playing the ball into the corner in injury time - then was stopped in his tracks when the defender's ball through the middle led to the penalty.

He said: "Lionel puts it down the middle, it gets headed back out, headed back in and we've got a penalty.

"I was like, 'brilliant ball Lionel but you should have put it in the corner!' I was so angry he'd not put it in the corner, then I saw the ref point to the spot.

"I still think Rangers will win the title but that's their concern not ours. Ours is to stay off the foot of the table.

Scorer Black reckons his spot-kick could be the most important in the club's history if it helps them stay up.

The midfielder said: "That's probably the biggest penalty we have ever had and fair play to the referee for having the bottle to give it here.

"He waited for a split second and I didn't think he was going to award it. But he did."

It was a bad night on what is going to be a very tight run in.

We are bad and missed the quality of Mendes big time. They packed everyone behind the ball and we never had a clue how to break them down.

In saying that, Ceptc are just as pish if not more so and I sill see us taking the title.
