Rangers to sack 20 staff

AROUND 20 Rangers staff were last night facing the sack — as the club cuts costs to beat the credit crunch.

Bosses at the debt-ridden club have asked all 200 non-football employees to consider redundancy.

The move comes weeks after the Ibrox side FAILED to flog any of its big names during the January transfer window.

And only a week after its £3.9million loss for the second half of last year was blamed on the team’s FAILURE to reach the Champions League.

Last month chairman Sir David Murray warned: “We have to bring down costs. This financial downturn is a reality check for everyone.”

And last night a club source revealed: “There are rumours flying all over the place.

“No one really knows what state the finances are in.

“The bosses are said to be looking to shed about 20 jobs, which is a sizeable chunk of the workforce. There isn’t much sympathy for the club’s players.

“David Murray said they may have to take pay cuts.

“But what’s that when the axe is hovering over the jobs of day-to-day workers who have mortgages to pay?”

The voluntary redundancy offer applies to backroom staff at Ibrox and the club’s Murray Park training ground.

Decision

In January, Rangers were on the verge of securing a much-needed £3.8m boost when they accepted Birmingham City’s offer for top scorer Kris Boyd.

Explaining the decision at the time, Mr Murray said: “People are asking how bad is it at Rangers? If we did not take this action, it COULD have been bad.”

But the move fell through when Boyd, 25, could not agree personal terms.

In the same month, The Scottish Sun told how the club was also considering the sale of captain Barry Ferguson, keeper Allan McGregor or defender Madjid Bougherra to fill the hole in its finances — but all three stayed at Ibrox.

Last week Rangers declared a loss of almost £4m for the last six months of 2008 — and blamed the team’s Champions League qualifier loss to lowly Lithuanian minnows Kaunas.

M Murray has warned EIGHT first-team stars will be let go this June. Yet last summer he spent £17m on new players.

They included Bougherra (£2.5m), Pedro Mendes (£3m), Steven Davis (£3m), Maurice Edu (£2.6m), Kyle Lafferty (£3m), Kenny Milller (£2m) and Andrius Velicka (£1m).

But last night an Ibrox source insisted the redundancy move was NOT as a result of the club’s failure to flog stars.

The insider said: “It’s nothing to do with selling players. The club would be looking at their costs anyway.”

A Rangers spokeswoman said: “The club is looking at its costs. As part of this review, it is giving staff the option of voluntary redundancy.”

Its not even like we have scouts for fuck sake. No shops to pay staff bills. Bain raking in a fortune and wasting it on his fake fucking tans. We have players like Velicka Hemdani Webster etc that will not be sold at the end of the season and will more than likely be paid off so why not do that now.

Ally McCoist should be let go and we should bring him back when he has gained experience at another club if we are so skint. Murray Mints should just sell the club to the next bidder, he has said before that he has recieved offers before but they were not the ideal candidates for the job. Well look how far we are falling with him in charge could it get any worse??

What gets me is that it's the ordinary working person who loses their jobs and not the mediocre underachieving lazy bastards on the park that don't.

Get rid of ferguson,McCulloch and Lafferty,Hemdani,Boyd and Velicka and save £4.5m a year...problem solved

All businesses need to look at there costs - at all times - players will go, and others will also go. Note they are looking for people to consider redundancy - the will shed 20 jobs over 6 months or so just in natural turnaround of staff - and wont replace them.

I would be more worried about Setantas finances than Rangers - they are struggling for ad revenue - look at ITV - they will NEED to renegotiate or go down - and that will have an impact on all Scottish clubs!

This is a complete non-story unworthy of even making the papers let alone the front page.

Ineptitude runs top to bottom in our club and losing 20 members of staff is a lot less than many other businesses of a similar size right now.

I love all these just get rid of Hemdani, Dailly type posts that keep getting repeated over and over.

If it was that fucking easy do you not think it would have happened already??

get the first 11 to take pay cuts, some of them dont deserve half of what they are earning after that gutless performance on wednesday. At least the non football staff are probably doing what they are supposed to be doing and doing well.

Walter and his staff and the players should take a wage reduction first.

Ironic that some are talking of Walter being kicked 'upstairs'. In other words having an unnecessary (and no doubt well paid) job created for him.

Sad for the people who may lose their jobs, particularly when the incompetent management of the club has allowed this mediocre and bloated squad to swell beyond reason.

Surely the players could take £500 or £1000 a week of their wages.

People are losing their jobs because of the players' inability to beat a Lithuanian pub team, so surely they are the ones that should be taking the hit.
