Rangers Youngster Giorgos Efrem has received his first full call-up from Cyprus.

The 19 year old, who is on loan at Dundee, had been named in the Cypriot under 21s but has impressed so much at Dens Park he has now been drafted into the full squad.

This means Efrem will now travel to Larnaca for Saturday's game againts Georgia, before headung to Sofia to face Bulgaria on Wednesday.

Dundee boss Jocky Scott said 'We're delighted, it's a great honour and shows he's been making great progree since he joined us.'

Good to see some of our younger players getting the recognition.

Andy Little will probably earn his first cap for Northern Ireland's first team as well this weekend.

Makes you wonder why neither can get a game when we struggle for width and, occasionally, goals.

Surely should be trying to push in to the team from next year then.

All the signs are there for there to be a team bristling with youth, hungry for action, to be coming through next season. Lots of them have had tasters of the first team now, some with tasters and experience of international squads; just enough to whet their appetite fresh for next year.

Honestly believe next year we could see a youthful exciting team.

It is a major concern the way talented youngsters are treated at Ibrox.

From what I have heard and seen there are quite a few who are not getting a chance whilst getting more and more frustrated at not being considered behind dud in the first team.

Do you think that will happen under the current regime?

Might have to if we finish second.

Indeed it might be forced upon them. There have been lots of little tid-bits scattered throughout the press and through the AGM's etc that Walter has been told to trim the squad right the way down and to accentuate it with youth.

When we get into Europe next season, our squad will be under the same pressures in terms of minutes on the park as it ever was in the Champions League and we will be forced to reach into our squad to come and play games on Saturdays after Wednesday Champions League games, or on Wednesdays after Sundays once the fixture backlog mounts in the second half of the season.

With (hopefully) much of the deadwood gone, the only players that will be there are youth players. I think that Smith is aware of this and that is why he is getting as many of them first team experience as he can now.

In general, I agree with your sentiment. Walter perhaps isn't going to be the man to get the best out of the current crop of talent coming through from Murray Park, but I think his hand will be forced next season and I sincerely hope that some of the youngsters give him no choice but to let them keep their place in the side on merit.

Let's be fair though; much as I do dearly love Gio and want him to be in our squad...

Getting called up to Cyprus' squad is as easy as turning up. :craphead:

If McCoist takes over, then, quite possibly, if Smith is still here, probably not, but, stranger things have happend

Was speaking to a couple of Dundee ST holders on Wednesday and they are very impressed with Efrem. He's been playing in a few positions - out on the left and in the centre alongside Shinnie and their partnership is working very well.

Shinnie seems to be pulling the strings in the middle of the park and Efrem is getting up and down the left all day. His touch and decision making has improved greatly and he's going by people like they are not even there. Also working very hard on his delivery.

They are absolutley devestated that both Shinnie and Efrem will be missing for a couple of games due to the internationals.

Great news.
