Proper Charlie

Blackpool want to start a summer clearout at Rangers after launching a move to keep Charlie Adam following his successful loan spell.

Bloomfield Road manager Tony Parkes told Sportsmail he was anxious to concludea deal for the Ibrox midfielder as quickly as possible and head off other interested parties alerted by Adam’s fine form in the Coca-Cola Championship.

Despite being sent off on his Blackpool debut in February, the 23-year-old established himself as a key player and the Lancashire club have made retaining his services a top priority.

Given that Blackpool’s record transfer fee is just £300,000, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to clinch the permanent signing of Adam if other bids come forward.

Parkes, however, is determined to pull out all the stops to land a player under contract at Ibrox until 2012.

‘I have spoken to our club secretary and we will be in touch with Rangers to see if we can do a deal for Charlie,’ said Parkes.

‘I know Charlie has not been involved at Rangers, but they are a top club. He was unable to get a starting place in their team for any length of time but he has been excellent for Blackpool and we would be delighted to get a deal done.

‘We are trying to get it sorted as quickly as possible — if it is able to happen. I think Charlie would like to stay with us. He has enjoyed his time here and hopefully we can get an agreement.

‘There was no fee struck when Charlie came on loan, so that has to be negotiated. It is a problem Charlie has set for us because he has played so well that we want

to keep him.

‘When you come on loan to any club, you put yourself in the shop window. We are aware there might be a bigger club lurking around the corner who might prove more attractive for him. That’s the way football goes, but we are trying to get in first.’

Rangers are seeking to shed a number of squad members this summer as the club attempts to bolster its finances.

Alan Gow, currently on loan at Norwich, could land a permanent deal at Carrow Road if they remain in the Championship, while the contracts of Brahim Hemdani, Christian Dailly and David Weir are all up at the end of the season.

Fringe players Lee McCulloch, DaMarcus Beasley and Andy Webster are among those likely to be moved on if possible.

Doubts also remain over the futures of ‘Boozegate’ pair Allan McGregor and, in particular, Barry Ferguson.

Adam plays the last game of his Blackpool loan deal in their season-closer against Swansea on Sunday. Parkes feels the player, often a target for supporter ire at Ibrox, has had his confidence restored since switching south.

‘My impression of what has happened at Rangers is that there have been too many big players around and he has just drifted,’ said Parkes. ‘We have put an arm around his shoulder when needed and I think that is one of the reasons why he would like to stay here. But there is no guarantee that Blackpool can afford what Rangers want or,

indeed, that some other club won’t come in for him.

‘He has added something different to the centre of our midfield and he has been a big contributor to Blackpool staying in the Championship this season.’

I think the success of players like Adam, Burke, McCormack, Thiompson and Gow in the Championship, despite being out of favour in the SPL have proven that Rangers aren't as weak compared to English opponents as some people have made out in recent years.

I'd still have never let Burky go though

It would be a great signing for Blackpool but I reckon Adam is probably worth a bit more than Blackpool's record transfer so far. Is there any news on whether Adam is actually enjoying his time down there?

I think its a fair assement, that given he is doing so well, he is enjoying his football, hes showed it at st mirren when he went away and always talked well about them. I think its pretty good that he is going down there and showing that he is a level above players in that league, because the last thing he and we would have needed was for him to have a nightmare down there

charlie adam had potential when he broke into the rangers team but hes went backwards since then and i would gladly get rid of him. We must get the best possible price for him. We are skint and need to raise as much money from players sales as can. You dont do that by flogging players on the cheap. We should be looking for £1m minimum plus a percentage of any future sale before we let him go. The amount of money the tims manage to get for their fringe players is criminal. They got £1.25m for beattie ffs plus add ons and i think hes pish. We got less than that for ricksen and he was a good player. About time we started getting what we deserve for our players instead of flogging them on the cheap or just letting them go for nothing, burke buffel etc in recent times.

Blackpool could never afford £1m. I think he will end up going to a "big" championship club, eg Cardiff. He seems to have done well so i don't think he'll be short of offers.
