Rangers blank Kris Boyd deal talks

RANGERS have NOT made any moves to offer leading goalscoring Kris Boyd a contract extension.

And the Ibrox club are now seriously running the risk of losing the £3.5m-rated hitman for nothing at the end of the season.

SportTimes understands Rangers have not made any contact with the player or his agent Mark Donaghy over the summer to open talks over extending his current deal.

The 25-year-old reported to Murray Park this morning with the rest of his team-mates for the first day of their pre-season preparations.

And he is determined to remain at the club as they attempt to retain their SPL crown and prepare for the Champions League.

But his future is still very much in doubt with no contract offer on the table. Boyd's preferred option would be to sign an improved contract at Ibrox, but there are no signs from the club that such a deal will be forthcoming.

Rangers could attempt to cash in on the player before the end of the transfer window.

However, Boyd is holding all the aces as he could see out the remainder of his contract and sign a Bosman with another club in January.

That would mean Rangers losing out on a serious cash injection.

Birmingham City were willing to pay £3.8m for Scotland's leading goalscorer last season.

Now is the time to cash in on him!

It's not the time to offer him a new deal. Walter will see how he does in the next few months in the SPL and CL and then offer him a contract if he's doing well.

Iif he's still in the manager's plans and scoring goals before December they'll offer him a deal.

Totally disagree. His current valuation could easily double to £7m+ if he does well in the Champions League.

No chance.

He is in the last year of his contract and won't be offered a new one by the looks of things. So if he plays in the CL come January he can sign a pre-contract with someone and leave for nothing.

Take the money now and run!

KRIS BOYD reported to Murray Park for pre-season training today with his long-term Rangers future still very much in the balance.

As Walter Smith put his players through their paces for the first time since they clinched the double last term, serious question marks continue to exist over whether their leading goalscorer will be on board to help them defend their SPL crown.

The 25-year-old is now in the final year of his contract and has made it clear he is in no rush to quit his boyhood heroes, despite continued speculation the club will be forced to cash in on a top player before the current transfer window shuts.

SportTimes today reveals no talks have taken place between the player, his representatives or the Ibrox hierarchy over a contract extension as a posse of clubs weigh up making a move for the £3.5million-rated hitman.

As things stand, the longer the Light Blues leave it, the more power they hand to the player - and the bigger the risk they run of losing perhaps their most bankable asset for nothing in less than a year's time.

Boyd believes he is worthy of an improved offer to bring him into line with some of the club's top earners.

Even though Rangers are making serious cutbacks to reduce their wage bill, Boyd's £11,000-a-week salary is still well short of what others such as Pedro Mendes, Steven Davis and Kenny Miller are banking.

Boyd currently has the option of seeing out the remainder of his contract before joining a new club on a Bosman deal which he could put in place as early as January.

Rangers, of course, could bite the bullet and offer him a better deal to keep him at the club. Alternatively, they could go for a quick sale or hang on to him until January before trying to flog the player in a cut-price deal.

Here, we take a look at the various options open to both parties and the consequences of what they might hold.

SEES OUT HIS CONTRACT FOR BOYD He would find himself in a position to demand a signing-on fee in excess of £1m if he allows his current contract to expire.

There has always been a great deal of interest in him from a string of Coca-Cola Championship clubs and one or two teams in the lower reaches of the Premiership might be tempted with someone with such an impressive goals-per-game ratio.

Boyd would also be in a position to command a far greater salary because there would be no transfer fee involved which would make this the most appealing option based purely on money.

FOR RANGERS This would be a financial disaster for the Ibrox club. Rangers accepted a £3.8m bid from Birmingham City last season which fell through when the player failed to agree personal terms.

If Boyd was to sit tight and see out the remainder of his contract it would leave a huge dent in the club's financial plans. It could even prevent them from balancing the books and force the sale of an additional first-team player.

LEAVES IN THIS WINDOW FOR BOYD It would mean he would more than likely find himself trying to help a Championship side win promotion to the Premiership.

The player has made it clear he has no desire to quit Rangers, especially as they prepare to try and defend their SPL crown and get ready to tackle some of Europe's top clubs when the Champions League group stage begins.

FOR RANGERS Walter Smith would find himself facing the near impossible task of replacing a man who has consistently bagged in excess of 25 goals every season.

The Rangers manager already has a host of strikers on the books, but he would have to hunt far and wide to find someone as clinical as Boyd inside the penalty area - none of the current lot have have matched his exploits so far.

LEAVES IN JANUARY FOR BOYD He almost quit Rangers in January when he held signing talks with Alex McLeish's Birmingham City and he could command a big pay-off from the Ibrox club for allowing them to bank a transfer fee just months before he could walk out the door for nothing.

FOR RANGERS It could leave Rangers entering the second half of a championship race with Old Firm rivals Celtic without their top striker. Many believed the Ibrox club wouldn't have won the SPL title had they sold Boyd to Birmingham and it could make life ten times tougher for Walter Smith to ensure they are in a position to successfully defend their title.

GETS NEW GERS DEAL FOR BOYD This would be the player's preferred scenario. He wants an improved contract that will keep him at the club for what should prove to be the best years of his career.

FOR RANGERS It might mean them increasing his wages at a time when they are trying to enforce cuts. But it would also allow them control of the situation again as they could either keep him at the club or control when and where he moves, and how much for, in the future.

That is a triumph of hope over experience....

Stranger things have happened than Boydy scoring goals though! If he gets the CL game time, there's every chance he could

score us a few.

Boyd has said often (publicly) that he's a "Rangers supporter" though he hasn't done an ex-Captain Barry and claimed he'll be "buried in my Rangers top", well, it's time to see how much of a Rangers man he is because as sure as night follows day when they do sit down to negotiate his next contract it won't be what Boyd is looking for.

I think the writing is on the wall for Boyd whilst Smith is at the helm. You need only look at the work rate (backtracking etc) of Kenny Miller (a Smith signing) to recognise what Smith is looking for from a forward.

Boyd has never fitted that bill.

As they say, "It's all about opinions." :(

If he leaves, the 30+ goals a season won't happen, also the beggers will have the top scorers this season if Boyd leaves, cos no way will we bring in a striker that can hit that many goals in a season as Boyd does, utter pish if he gets sold! :anguish:

I couldn't care less if they have the top scorers as long as we have the SPL trophy!

I knw, so do I...but its another thing to rub into them...us having the leading scorer in the country every season.

I doubt the club would accept a £4m offer for him now. It would need to be significantly higher & even then, I doubt that Boyd would agree on terms unless it was to a really big club & he was being asked to leave.

It is a great GIRFUY having the top scorer. It's the type of thing that causes fights in my street. Then again, when we won the league there was fcuking running battles on my street all night. :gerbad:

Now is the time for Walter Smith to decide whether to offer him a new deal or cash in on him.

If we lose him for peanuts, or even worse, on a free, then everyone at Rangers might aswell just give up.

Are we really that skint that we can't offer him a new deal, does Walter Smith want him at the club, or is this just mhedia bullshit? I know which one I think it is, especially at this time of the pre-season.
