StevenDavis 112
Real Madrid have reiterated their desire to add Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso to their list of high-profile summer recruits. Reports suggest that the Premier League club are asking for up to £50m for the 27-year-old Spanish international. "Madrid don't discard an option until it is truly impossible," said Real sporting director Miguel Pardeza. "Right now there is an insurmountable economic barrier but that is something that can change." Madrid have spent £209m so far this summer to bring Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol to the Bernabeu as part of president Florentino Perez's new 'galactico' project, designed to bring the world's best players to the club. However, director general Jorge Valdano has said the club also want to sign more homegrown players, including Alonso, who played for Real Sociedad before moving to Liverpool in the summer of 2004. In May, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez insisted he did not want to sell the midfielder, saying: "Alonso has three years left on his deal - we're really pleased with him. We don't want to sell." Pardeza also revealed that Real currently have no plans to attempt to sign Arsenal and Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas. "He's a great player, without a doubt but, at the moment, he is not a Real Madrid target," said Pardeza. "The club is working on other ones." Real have also been heavily linked to Bayern Munich's 26-year-old French international midfielder Frank Ribery. The Madrid squad trained together for the first time on Friday since the club's expensive summer recruitment drive. However, a number of players present at the Valdebebas complex may soon be departing the club, including Dutch striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar. The 25-year-old has been linked with a summer move to Manchester United, but now seems set to join German side Stuttgart with Spanish media suggesting a 20m euro (£18m) transfer fee has been agreed between the clubs. "There are negotiations and we're just about at the point where the player needs to make a decision," said Pardeza. Fellow Dutch internationals Ruud van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder have all been linked with moves away from the Bernabeu. With all the attacking purchases Real Madrid made, Alonso would be a fb signing in general, not just because he's an out and out midfielder. He's very important to Liverpool and I don't expect them to let him away unless they are given a Ronaldo-esque bid from Real Madrid, but how far can Madrid delve into their pockets to get Alonso? Nemesis 277
Huntelaar is going for 20m Sneijder prob for 20-25m Another 15m for Robben Thats 55-60m back in. Pop a 30m bid in for Alonso and Liverpool will bite. They need to cos they are fairly skint in World terms.

Just about every reason possible. Tactically he doesnt really fit into Pellegrini's plans (far too one footed and generally not fluid enough), Perez dislikes him (he was Calderon's 'Ronaldo') and Madrid need the money. If he doesnt find a club he probably wont even be registered for the coming season. By the way, those figures above are pure fantasy. Sneijder will go for about half that, likewise Huntelaar. PS - wouldn't say he was Madrid's best player last season. Pepe under Ramos was stupendously good up until he went bonkers against Getafe.

They're the only team to register a real interest though. By the way, the Alonso interest from Madrid has cooled a bit. Apparently Joao Moutinho is now the target. papaguy51 912
I think I'd actually hate to waste Veloso in a defensive midfield role. He's a complete all rounder to be fair though.

If we're going to sign anyone from Lisbon, it should be Veloso! I rate Veloso higher than Moutinho as well. It's peculiar as Veloso is far more similar to Alonso than Moutinho is. If only De La Red was available (and continuing his ascent towards being the best midfielder in Spain, such was his level of performance), we wouldn't have to be scrambling around Europe panicking. It's interesting to see where Gago fits in though because he does have a future, but Real see him more as a 'Guti' rather than a Diarra. God knows how he ended up playing at centre half last season. And then there's the original Diarra.

His short to medium passing game especially is probably the best around just now.
