PEDRO MENDES reckons the return of Kevin Thomson could be Rangers' "best signing" of the summer as they get set to defend the SPL and sample the Champions League once more.

The Portuguese playmaker struck up a great partnership with Thomson in the early part of last season before the former Hibs midfielder suffered the trauma of cruciate ligament damage in his knee at Kilmarnock last November.

Now with Barry Ferguson seemingly on his way to joining Birmingham City, the Mendes-Thomson axis looks like being the first choice central midfield partnership.

Mendes said: "I see Kevin Thomson coming back as a big signing for Rangers.

"I think he will probably be the best signing this season. He is back for full training and getting back to fitness.

"He proved in the early stages of last season how good a player he is and how improved he is.

"He has improved his game in the last year or so. So, regarding new players coming in, Kevin Thomson will probably be the most important signing for Rangers this year."

Rangers have agreed a £1m fee for Ferguson with Birmingham City which will rise by £250,000 with add-ons and the former captain is expected to complete a deal today.

It will be Ferguson's second crack at the Premiership after 18 months at Blackburn Rovers and Mendes is sure he will do well.

He said: "Barry is a very good player and good players can go to the Premier League and do well. He'll have absolutely no problems going down there for a second time and doing well."
