SIR David Murray has insisted that this is the best year for many years for the best young talent at Murray Park to come through and make their mark in a trimmer Rangers first team squad.

The game plan all along has been to cut the top team pool by 20 per cent and augment a tighter unit with the best young players.

Sir David Murray and manager Walter Smith agreed a strategy where the manager would operate with a smaller group and give youth its chance.

He told rangers.co.uk: "Walter made it clear at the AGM and I reiterated last January that we want to have 20 seasoned professionals augmented by the younger players we have been nurturing.

"We have been working very hard at Murray Park but in terms of initial cost running the place we have spent well over £25m. We have to see a return and if we don't get one then there is no point in the facility being in place.

"We have a group of younger ones who can step up and pull on the blue jersey and make us all very proud.

"The proof of the pudding and in the recent Scotland v England youth international Rangers had the greatest amount with five players starting.

"Other players will go to enable the enactment of the pattern that Walter and I have agreed upon.

"We have been quite consistent. We can't have players earning £600,000 or £700,000 per year and sit out most of the matches. In this financial climate it is unacceptable.

"So we need a smaller squad that keeps fit, plays regularly and is supported by good young players who have come through the ranks.

"This is a classic opportunity for us to bring these young players in while also holding on to our best talent.

"When you look at last season we did not see a lot of Kevin Thomson due to an unfortunate injury, we only saw Maurice Edu and Kyle Lafferty in spells and we still have Steven Naismith to make a major contribution.

"So there is good young talent whose abilities will undoubtedly improve.

The vast majority of the squad have better years of football ahead of them."
