David Weir

“There’s no doubt we wish we had more professionals in Scotland like David Weir,” Burley started. “But I think, approaching 40, it was maybe a time to have a look at Steven Caldwell.

“You’ve got Berra [Christophe], you’ve got Barr [Darren]…Gary Caldwell has established himself in the team. We are without Stephen McManus, and I felt it was the time to bring Steven [Caldwell] in.” - George Burley. Scotland manager

You maybe wanted to experiment George, but all you did was create your very own Frankenstein and in the process you delivered a rather public slap in the face to one of the most respectful, dignified and professional players in the Scottish game.

Tonight I watched a defence that was a shambles from start to finish and right at the epicentre of it was a rampant John Carew (a man who was relatively quiet at Hampden) and the Chuck......sorry, Caldwell brothers.

One sent off before half time, the other hooked just four minutes after half time to save himself from getting sent off

I could go on to talk about the lack of organisation and basic defending principals that were missing, but I don't have all night so I'll get straight to the point: David Weir might have his faults. His age goes against him, he doesn't have the greatest distribution and he lacks pace.

But what he does do is defend well and organise. Something that you needed tonight.

Nice work George. Nice work (tu)

David Weir. 39 and counting.......................

Superb post mate. You hit the nail on the head. I asked in another post if Davie had retired from INT'l Football. I cannot believe he wasn't selected if he was available.

Jesus... just to talk to the back 4 in training if nothing else. The man knows how to play. The Caldwell brothers are a disgrace. Big Davie? A gent and a model pro that CAN still play.

I don't care how old David Weir might be (only two years older than Graham Alexander for Pete's sake), but you do not start fucking about with your team selection (ie, bringing in untested players, or players that haven't played internationals in three/six years) before an important World Cup qualifier. That's what friendlies are for. He did this with Iwelumo and look what happened. The man's a fucking loon.

Excuse the swearing, but all my lucidity goes out the window when faced with such international class trumpetry.

tbh i assumed too he must have opted out himself.

selection of championship players in general is a joke

Why? The Championship is a better level than the SPL.

Carew was more than a match for Davie at Hampden.

We were 4 goals worse off tonight, huge backward step imo, the team selection was shocking, and it showed itself in the result.

We ended up with 2 right backs in the middle because 3 went off. Before any of that, Scotland looked very comfortable.
