Glen Johnson on £139,000-a-week?

It has emerged that Liverpool are paying Glen Johnson a staggering £139,000 a week.

Eyebrows were raised when the Reds splashed out £17million on the Portsmouth right-back this summer but his salary will leave fans gobsmacked.

The sum must make him the best paid full back in the world - even after Chelsea defender Ashley Cole agreed a new £120,000-a-week deal to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Even Manchester City, who have spent an incredible £118million on players this summer, will pay latest signing Joleon Lescott only a reported £94,000 a week.

Spiralling wages in the Barclays Premier League have reached such a crazy level that Liverpool, so desperate to ensure Chelsea would not beat them for the signature of Johnson, were forced to offer a huge contract.

I think what he was saying was he'd been poorly advised on the tax situation in the UK.

His salary was halved after tax and he wasn't expecting it.

To the man sleeping under a bridge, you'd be greedy asking for a £5k a year payrise.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool had bids accepted, maybe Liverpool were that desperate for him they paid that much.

Surely not when they have to limit their centr-half spending to £2m?

This was before they sold Alonso as well.

Ive said many times, English football wages is destroying the game. Thats ludicrous to pay such an average player. Millions of fans struggle to pay ever inflating costs to watch these greedy bastards. Instead clubs should be giving something back to the fans with reductions in costs. Shameful.
