EddieBadabing 0
As hard as tonight's scoreline is to take, perspective is needed. I actually thought we played very well tonight in the first half. Against one of the best teams in Europe (no doubt about it) our passing was good, our defending was good, we matched Sevilla all over the park, our tempo was high, our one-two's were crisp, we won most of the physical battles, and we created one or two opportunities (without ever bombarding them) despite only having one up front. Every player in the team was playing to a high level. We were going into the second half rightly optimistic of picking up at least a point. Right? But here's the inescapable truth: that was our team playing to arguably the maximum they can, but money talks and money buys quality. Sevilla's quality always looked like it would come to the surface, even though we were playing well. As it proved, they took their chances and finished us off quick style and there's not much else we could've done about tonight's result in my honest opinion. Hard for me to stomach, but this is where we are now, the state of play in football has changed forever and finances dictate what can happen on the park more than ever in the history of football. This is what we must start to recognise, that when competing against the absolute top level clubs, if they perform at all against us, then it is a very, very, tall order for our team and good results against them will be very few and far between. But we can still be proud and we can still strive to achieve at this level, and we must remember tonight we still have a great chance of going through from this group, if injuries and suspensions are kind for us. Our club must continue to better our situation on and off the park, but maybe tonight brings into sharp focus the problems that we face now and for the foreseeable future. But one last thought, if we play on Sunday like we did tonight, I don't think we will have many problems at all.
