TN8 7
Sorry my first post here has to be a negative one. But Pedro just isn't bringing anything to the team at the moment, and i think Sunday is the time to leave him on the bench and play a midfield of McCulloch, Thomson and Davis. I dont know if its a confidence thing with Mendes, but he just isn't bothering his arse to try the kind of passes and touches that opened teams up last season. Its Thomson & McCulloch's job to keep things simple and give the ball to Mendes & Davis who can do something with it, but all Mendes seems to want to do at the moment is pass the ball 5 yards straight back to them. My preferred midfield on Sunday would be Davis McCulloch Thomson Novo; with Naismith & Lafferty (if fit) up top. Wouldnt play Rothen from the start, as Celtic's wingers and full-backs have a bit of pace about them and will need to be tracked when they go forward. I think we'll get the win if we take our chances, but we need Mendes to either remember he's a Champions League winner and a really gifted player, or else be left on the bench where his half-hearted passes and challenges wont lead to us losing the midfield. Tumshie 205
Can't disagree with that. Mendes looks a shadow of the player he was at the start of last season
Guest
Get Mendes to fuck in January if you ask me, keep playing him in the CL and hopefully he'll do something that will make someone want to sign him, dropp him for everything else. Hasnt kicked a ball in months. Its time for the Mendes lovers to realise he's not the player we thought he was.
papaguy51 941
Your first post? It's your 22nd post, apparently. But I agree. While I think people have had the knives out for Mendes since day one this year, he just hasn't done it for me. Not sure what's wrong with the guy, but the sooner Edu is back the better. sillybilly 151
i actually thought mendes was one of our better players last night. he wasnt in the team at the weekend through suspension and we hardly created any chances and the midfield couldnt keep the ball at all. mendes at least offers you a bit better than that. i admit he needs a wee kick up the backside as we all know he is capable of a lot better than his recent performances suggest and i dont think he is the long term soloution, but he is one of the more experienced guys in the squad and would and should start against a team like seville while we are so thin in terms of sqaud numbers. cooper1989 0
I was going to start a thread about 'who has let us down the most this year'. But this thread is good enough since my choice was Mendes. I think it's because I/WE expected so much from him in the CL.. but he has been one of our worst players. Simple passes... cannot perform. Invisible. Not the player we signed -- that's for sure.
papaguy51 941
starting to see why mendes was the portsmouth 2nd team b4 me bought him He wasn't really - another myth! Harry Redknapp admits he was forced to sell Pedro Mendes to Rangers to balance the books and must rely on loan signings to bolster his Portsmouth squad ahead of their first European campaign. Mendes was inked into Redknapp's midfield for their Barclays Premier League opener at Chelsea tomorrow when Pompey accepted a £3million offer for the Portuguese international. "He played at Wembley last week and would definitely have been in my team at Chelsea," said Redknapp. "It was a necessity. It wasn't too good an offer, Pedro is probably worth more than that. "I'm sorry to lose him because I loved him as a fella and as a player. "But I had to get some money in. You've got to balance the books.
Muff 245
The fact is that Pedro Mendes isn't the player some make him out to be! Far too tippy tappy, slows the play down to walking pace, wasteful in possession, goes into hiding mode far too often, pushed off the ball far too easily, get's caught out of position, awful delivery, decision making is poor, instead of trying to play a simple ball he tries a hollywood pass with the outside of the boot which 9/10 does not come off.... He's not kicked a ball all season, and is living off a few of his past performances, and goals. A luxury we can't afford, and if he was Lee McCulloch, Steven Whittaker, Kenny Miller, he'd be getting dogs abuse.
sillybilly 151
looking forward to getting Edu back I can't understand why Mendes isn't showing us the talent we know he has...its a mystery.. surely your not saying you would play edu who has only turned pro 2 years ago to start in the champions league instead of mendes, who has played in the premiership and actually won the champions league ? we all know that mendes never had an amazing game last night, but to pair edu and thompson who have zero champions league games under their belt is crazeeee !! What the fuck has that go to do with it? The fact is that Edu doesn't hide, keeps it simple, never loses the ball and suits out style of play much better. Just because Mendes played in a Porto side that won the CL five or six years ago doesn't mean he should ALWAYS start.

Orangeclement 619
i feel people are over stating Edu's ability , is he not out with a serious Knee injury ?? how do you know he will come back the same player ??????? this is the same lot that keep shouting down anyone that announces they think thommo will be our best midfielder. His experience is doing sweet feck all for us at the moment Billy - he hasn't kicked his own arse for months. He needs a rocket up his arse, and if that comes from a prolonged spell on the bench, so be it.
