Can anyone answer this query for me,Russia, bosnia go out on away goals. Algeria beat Egypt 3-1 in the first leg lose2-0 in the second, should be out on away goals but have a play off which algeria win.Surely the world cup rules should be the same for all play offs.Very puzzled bear. watp :p20:

Each federation is given a certain number of places and it's up to them how they want to run their qualifiers. For instance in Asia they go through about 3 rounds of qualifying so the top seed teams get multiple shots at making it.

thanks for that.but you would still think in a major comp, the rules would be uniform, still puzzled.still if fifa can announce seeding in the play offs because france and portugal were looking dodgy anything goes. :sherlock:

Algeria won in a one off play off. Both teams finished there groups on the same records ie goals scored and conceded goal difference win draws and loses.

So to counter that both teams were required to play a one off game. Portugal actually won 2-0 on agg aswell mate

if the first leg was a group game. then egypt won 2-0 then algeria won 1-0 that makes it 2-1 to egypt. not argueing with anybody i genuinely dont uderstand it. watp :5260:

Right, the first game they played against each other was a group game.

The situation was that if Egypt won 2-0, then the two teams would be level on points and goal difference (thus there would be nothing to seperate them).

To seperate them they had to play a 1-match play off (which was the match last night).

Hope that explains it ;)
