Motherwell have announced Jim Gannon has surprisingly quit his role as manager at Fir Park.

The club have revealed that Gannon has decided to step down by mutual consent.

It is not known the reasons for Gannon's departure, but it will fuel rumours he could be on his way back to England.

The former Stockport boss joined Motherwell last summer and enjoyed a bright start to life in Scotland.

However, Motherwell have endured a disastrous run of form winning only one of their last 11 games.

The Boxing Day defeat to St Johnstone was Motherwell's fourth defeat on the trot and Gannon has decided to step down.

Motherwell have announced they have parted company with manager Jim Gannon after "he repeatedly refused to sign a contract" with the Fir Park club.

Gannon, previously of Stockport County, was appointed on 30 June.

But a club statement said: "Relations between the manager, staff and directors deteriorated to the extent that the situation became untenable."

Motherwell claim it had nothing to do with recent results but say Gannon was "not fully committed to the club".

strange one

breaking news on sky sports news

Not really strange, was well known he had lost the dressing room and along with no wins in two months the writing was on the wall. He also had far too much to say for himself, something that can only be done when your winning. Didnt appear to be the brightest player of politics
