Walter Smith - 'Simply not good enough'

WALTER SMITH has expressed his frustration after his side's 4-1 defeat to St. Johnstone at McDiarmid Park this evening.

The Gers gaffer could only watch on as his side suffered their worst ever defeat to the Perth side and it was also the first time they had scored four goals against the Glasgow giants.

Smith admitted that Derek McInnes' men deserved their win but he was also livid at the way his players performed in a first-half the Saints dominated.

He said: "It's a very disappointing night for us, we started the game very poorly.

"It's as bad as we have started in any game game this season.

"In comparison, St. Johnstone started the game extremely well and in the first-half they were excellent.

"In the second-half we got to grips with things but never really created a great deal.

"We had a bit of territorial advantage but overall I can't begrudge St. Johnstone their win because they played extremely well.

"I can't take anything away from them tonight.

"They set themselves up well against us, as do almost every club at this time of the season.

"Normally we get a good reaction but we lost four really poor goals.

"They were brighter and more aggresive than we were, especially in the first-half of the game, and that is what's so frustrating"

How many times have we heard this from Walter Smith, Ally McCoist, David Weir, Kenny Miller, and Lee McCulloch this season, and in other years. David Weir said a few months back that he didn't know why the players started soo poorly, and didn't know who to sort it out.

It's a major problem with these set of players, especially in cup games.

Get it sorted ffs, along with other areas - it's not good enough that the oppostion can be up for games, show they want it more, set the tempo, over-run, and out fight us...

Totally agree.

Don't know why we start so slowly.

The players should be fired up and looking to kill the game off as early as possible!

We looked great in December when we pressed teams in their half and played at a fast pace from the 1st whistle!!

It did help we had 2 fast wingers playing in these games but no matter who plays we should start the game with the correct attitude!!

I just will never be able to wrap my head around this lack of effort bugbear. These players are representing Rangers Football Club - how the hell hard can it be to motivate yourself to go out and give your very best every time?!! There are some who will do it, but there are too many that look like they can't be arsed until they're a goal down.

I think what we are seeing is the effects of a small squad which was already lacking any real creative players becoming stagnant and complacent.

Nearly two years without freshening things up with new players and improved quality is bound to catch up with us at some stage and I think its become more evident after tonight. This coupled with the toll of a long season on such a limited squad is what we are witnessing.

Luckily we have enough of a cushion which should see us over the finish line.

They started the better and scored a right good(maybe flukey ) goal and then 2 severe deflections even own goals so it was a feak result and one we need to shake off.

Walter and Ally need to get them in this morning and boot fuck out them though...they obviously think they are superstars and can walk the league..no chance..

We should go out at Ibrox on Saturday and Wednesday and batter in 4 goals each game.....hopefully more against the Sheep shagging Ta1gs...

Walter should seriously consider dropping players for Saturday. If that's the motivation the current bunch have, give places to some of the players who are dying for a game.

Or do we just give them a roasting in the papers (and possibly in private) and let them carry on...?

glad Walter has the decency to compliment St Johnstone

was really shocked at that performance last night....we needed four games to win the league and if that doesn't motivate them what will? I just don't understand it

Maybe the lack of new signings is beginning to tell a bit ...no competition for places in the team...I just can't find an explanation for their dire showing last night

Same story, as with all our defeats.

Even in 70% of the games we win, we start off as if we're surprised to be playing a game of football.

I'm at a loss as to why we won't/can't do anything about it.

The players thought that the league was already wrapped up, they had better buck their idea's up and come out fighting on Saturday. As has been said i would also consider dropping some players.

LAst nights game was a disgrace, ok we can't win every game but the lack of effort is not good enough.

What's annoying me is that we play Hearts and kick the shit out of them and appear to be really up for the game by most of the players, then we go to St Johnstone, a team who on paper aren't necessary any better than Hearts and they play us of the park.

Changes need to be made for the game this weekend, I hate to say it but I hope Broadfoot is fit and placed at right back instead of Whittaker, hopefully Bougherra is back as well, drop either McCulloch(preferably) or KT in the middle (or both and play Edu), have Davis playing in the middle and have Beasley and Novo back on the wings, I'd even be tempted to drop Boyd and play Little up front with Miller.
