Walter admits he can see the finishing line

WALTER Smith last night admitted he can see the championship finishing line after beating Aberdeen.

But the Rangers boss refused to allow himself the luxury of declaring his side are already past the post with a 13-point lead and six games left to play.

Goals from Steven Davis, Kyle Lafferty and Kenny Miller saw the Ibrox side cruise to victory although Darren Mackie's late strike riled the home crowd temporarily.

Smith said: "We can see the finishing line and that's a really good position to be in if you're me.

"I know it sounds boring but that's as far as I'm prepared to go at the moment.

"We have to go to Tannadice to play Dundee United in our last match before the split and that's a tough place to visit.

"But we'll get a complete rest for a week before then and that could put freshness back into the players' legs."

Lafferty looked rejuvenated by his first goal since the cash with Motherwell at Ibrox in Decemeber - the only game he'd scored this season before last night's fixture.

Smith said: "I was pleased for Kyle because it was a terrific goal at a time when we needed to wide the gap between ourselves and Aberdeen.

"There has been an erratic aspect to Kyle's game and hopefully we can iron this out in time. But there have been good parts along the way as well.

"Aberdeen defended in the way I knew they wold and we needed to work hard to break them down.

"It needed something special to get us off the mark and Davis provided that with his goal in the first half."

Kris Boyd, subbed in his last two appearances, was left on the bench for all of last night's game. And Smith accepted his share of the blame for the player's goal drought.

The manager said: "It would have been unfair to have played Boyd. With the benefit of hindsight he should have had more time to train and regain strength after his hernia operation in January.

"Hopefully the break will make him better for Tannadice."

Rangers could win the title on Tayside but only if Celtic lose to Motherwell in their home game 24 hours earlier and Smith's side take all three points from United.

I am sure he has seen the finishing line for some time but would never admit it. Not long to go, it really has been a strange season but one I have thoroughly enjoyed. I will be taking nothing for granted at Tannadice we will need to really work for a win.

It would be great if for once they came out with "Ach it was over on Valentines day, these games are meaningless. We miss the chase!"

Would be the ultimate GIRUY to the Tims.

There is nothing wrong with that piece you quoted.

Celtic play in the cup at the weekend and Motherwell on Tuesday.

We play Dundee Utd Wednesday. If Celtic lose on the Tuesday we can win it Wednesday.

That's the situation and that's what that piece you quote says too.
