SPL/Europe rankings

Recommended Posts

According to the football stats organisation IFFHS the SPL has jumped five places in Europe which puts us as a league into 9th position, which apparently moves us above the Russian, Turkish and Greek leagues, now I don't know what the relevance of these stats will be, but should this give us a stronger standing in CL/Europa League places?

I am aware that individual clubs have to perform well when in Europe but will the above also have some bearing?

I think it's all based on team's performances in UEFA competitions:

UEFA Country Ranking

For the calculation of the country ranking, points in qualification matches are halved: one point for a win and half a point for a draw. Before 1999 the usual two points for a win and one point for a draw were also used in qualifying rounds.

The so-called UEFA coefficients are calculated by taking an average, based on the total number of points divided by the total number of teams of each country. See the country coefficients of 2009 for an example of such a calculation.

The UEFA country ranking is computed by the sum of 5 coefficients in the last 5 years. See the country ranking of 2009 for an example of such a ranking list. To determine the participants in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup the last year ranking is used, because each country should know at the start of the season how many places it disposes.

Scotland are 29th.

I've never heard of the organisation, so I'm unaware of the criteria they use, but according to Bert Kassie's excellent site, which is based on UEFA ranking points we will be going down, hence the loss of the automatic CL qualification place, to Belgium I believe. This downward trend will continue for the next couple of seasons, at least.

according to wikipedia the SPL is ranked 14th in europe. 2 up on last year so far.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_coefficient

they use this website to get their stats: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method4/crank2011.html

The reports today say we have jumped up five places to 9th in the rankings now which would equal what was on wiki ;)

well the reports are bollocks then. scotland would have to somehow have achieved 9 coefficent points between the end of last season and now to go up five places. thats about 40% of our overall points from the last 5 years doh

Looks to me like we're 16th. Scotland has had two disastrous years and they will stay with us for another three years. (It's based on the last five years performances).

The slide is likely to continue and it could be that it'll be a long time before we see another automatic CL qualification for the Scottish champions.

As usual Dundee Utd, Hibs and Motherwell will be knocked out when they meet half decent opposition which will probably be in the play off round. Given our current situation i can't see us getting anything out of whatever Champions League group we're in and Celtic will struggle to get to the group stages, even if they beat Braga the play off round is pretty difficult. They may manage some sort of a run in the Europa League depending on the draw but there's pretty decent opposition in there and they'll probably crash out when they do meet a good side.

So overall, another shite Scottish season in Europe is all i can see. :sherlock:

The sitution for Scotland is very grim.

We arent good enuf for CL & havent really been since Advocaats days, wishing results for any team does not work.In saying that we Scottish clubs need all teams inc the scum to play better in Europe, it benefits everyone in the long run.

I know its a waste of effort just typing this
