Steven Naismith, master-stroke or unnecessary?

Not the first time he's played there but he did have a decent game though - not forgetting his great finish for his 2nd goal - I wasn't convinced it was a MOTM performance.

I felt that whilst Steven wasn't awful I still felt he looked out of place in there and that it was the Management - or Walter Smith at least - not having the while he wasn't awful - trust to play a McMillan, Shinnie or a Ness centrally with Edu?

So was/is it master-stroke in playing Steven centrally as he's (arguably, saying this for the debate) a talented player who fits in well or unnecessary and just avoiding playing youth with shaping an expreienced player into an unusual position? It probably won't be the only time we have two out Davis, McCulloch and Edu all out this season.

when I think of Naismith at CM, I'm reminded of the Aberdeen game last November when he was thrown in there and we just couldnt get anything going, although he didnt have a bad game today, I cant agree with putting him at CM, one of the younger guys should have been there but he got his goal, made a few good tackles surprisingly and overall done a decent job, 3 pts so I wont complain.

I thought Naismith played well today not great and not bad but well enough.

For me he cant play that role though, maybe a bit further up the pitch but not like he was today.

His touch, pace, dribbling was all good today but he lacks the passing to play in a deeper role...a few times he tried to spread the play and put players under pressure and when he tried a through ball for Beattie or Miller it was either too heavy or got intercepted.

Hope he gets more games though as i really like Naismith but for me its make or break this season!

I believe this could be a good season for Stevie Naismith I think it was fair to give him man of the match. Youngsters in the first game of the season that is a lot to ask of them, at end of the day we had to shuffle it due to Davis and Mcculloch's viruses we got the 3 points that's all that matters

thought naismith done really well today . the guy next to him edu was fuckin hopeless ,seems to think he has all day on the ball, didnt think id ever say it but we missed mcculloch today . next game id go with davis naismith and mcculloch holding the american is a bit of a poser to me

It worked today but we really can't afford to continue our policy of square pegs in round holes.

It will work to a certain degree against the smaller clubs but with the circumstances that cropped up in today's game, it was an ideal opportunity to give a younger squad member a competitive game in his natural position. It would only serve to help their development and give them confidence that they can make the grade at Rangers. Instead, the youth see a first-team player being played out of position and could become disillusioned with life at the club.

It's a concern that's been voiced before and it's something that won't go away until we see more kids coming through and being played over an established name in an unfamiliar position.

Yeah, a more tactically aware/astute Manager could have really exposed our midfield today.

Just curious, as I thought Naismith was the standout today - who would you have given the MOM to ?

Pish, some of the balls Edu was spraying about today were fantastic, he does all the dirty work and can get up the field too, plus he has pace which is something our centre of the park has lacked for a while, he got stuck in today and he had to because Naismith deserted him quite a lot.

Naismith was excellent today I thought.

He also made some great runs which werent picked out.

Ive never seen Ness play, but I am satisfied that Shinnie or Hutton wouldnt have been capable of that performance

I think there is a big jump in class between the 1st team and our younger players

He should be making those runs playing as a striker though and not as a central midfielder, he got back at times to help but its clear as day he is not able to impose himself on the game in the centre of the park in the way that a Steven Davis would, cant fault his performance today though, he did well but I just worry what our youth players who are natural central midfielders have to do to play in the middle of the park (from the start).

I thought Edu was very good today, people seem to think because he looks relaxed on the ball hes doing something wrong, but he rarely actually does.

I also thought it was a more mature performance from what we have seen from him last season.
