Rangers could be following up their interest in South African defender Bongali Khumalo with a firm bid after the player’s club manager revealed a transfer was likely. Khumalo was the subject of interest from the Ibrox club last month before picking up an injury.

Walter Smith had previously confirmed that contact had been made over deals to sign both Khumalo and his international team-mate, striker Katlego Mphela.

"They are the right type and I think they could enhance our squad,” Smith said three weeks ago. “We are seriously considering both these players. I believe they could fit in well for us.

“Contact has been made, but we'll need to wait and see what happens in the coming weeks.”

Supersport made it clear that they would not stand in the player's way if they received a fair offer for one of their prized assets.

“Rangers have said they would like to sign the player and we are expecting them to follow things up with an offer,” a spokesman for the South African club said.

“We will have to wait and see what the offer is, but we won’t be holding Rangers to ransom.

“We know it would be a great opportunity for Khumalo to join one of the biggest clubs in Europe and it would be unfair for us to stop him moving over money.”

Khumalo was then hit by an injury that disrupted his preparations for the beginning of the South African league and it was thought that the deal was off. However, Gavin Hunt, manager of Khumalo’s club Supersport United, said on Monday that he believed he would be losing the services of his captain and key defender.

"I do not have much time (to find a replacement) but it looks like Khumalo might leave," Hunt said. "But nothing has been confirmed."

Tottenham Hotspur had also shown interest in Khumalo but wanted the international to go on trial. It is not known if the English Premier league club have stepped up their interest or if other suitors are rivalling Rangers for the player’s signature.

Rangers made their first signing of the summer last week when they agreed a deal to take Stoke City’s James Beattie and have also pursued Portsmouth’s Tommy Smith and Rapid Vienna’s Nikica Jelavic.

So the only evidence is the interviews from last month?

Im going to say this is pish.

The media have rehashed so many old stories this transfer window it's unreal. Do they forget we read the same old quotes the first time round?

Here is the latest from the South African Newspapers:

Johannesburg - Gavin Hunt has hinted that SuperSport United's central defender and captain Bongani Khumalo could exit the club ahead of the new season.

The Bafana Bafana star, who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, has received a wealth of interest in his services following the World Cup.

Football365.co.za broke the news that Khumalo had earned a trial with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, while Scottish giants Rangers have also made their admiration of the 23-year-old clear.

"I do not have much time (to find a replacement) but it looks like Khumalo might leave," Hunt said at the launch of the 2010/11 season in Maropeng on Monday night.

"But nothing has been confirmed."

Khumalo has been touted as a future Bafana captain by former coach Carlos Alberto Parreira and will be a major loss to United. But Hunt is renowned for dealing with the departure of key players and will be odds on to lead Matsatsantsa to yet another league crown.

Seems to me the STV report is pure speculation.
