Rangers were today pursuing a season-long loan deal for Manchester City winger Vladimir Weiss.

Ibrox boss Walter Smith is keen to secure the services of the 20-year-old Slovakian internationalist and contact has been made between the two clubs inside the past 24 hours.

SportTimes understands the English Premier League giants are demanding a substantial one-off loan fee for the player, as well as a contribution to his wages, even although they are awash with cash and have already shelled out £100m on five new players this summer.

It’s understood those demands killed off Stuttgart’s interest in Weiss. And Old Firm rivals Celtic, who also expressed an interest in the player who impressed at the World Cup this summer, are thought to have now turned their attentions elsewhere.

That has left Rangers in pole position to go after him, and the arrival of Weiss would finally provide Smith with the creative wide player he has been craving for the last couple of years.

An initial enquiry was made as far back as six weeks ago when Ibrox chief executive Martin Bain made contact with his City counterpart Brian Marwood.

However, at that time, City were yet to decide if they were willing to let Weiss leave.

Boss Roberto Mancini is a huge admirer of player and is thought to be keen for him to gain Champions League experience as he hopes he will become a key member of his squad next season and wants him to sample that level of football.

Weiss signed an extension with City in December which ties him to the club until 2012, then was sent on loan to Bolton for the second half of last season.

He caught Smith’s eye at the World Cup, winning the man-of-the-match award in Slovakia’s opening game with New Zealand.

Weiss also troubled Holland with his pace and trickery as Slovakia went down in the last 16 of the competition.

And Smith is hoping he can repeat those displays in the SPL if a deal can be thrashed out.

Rangers have been desperate to land an attacking wide player as Smith wants to go with a natural winger this term as opposed to playing existing members of his squad out of position.

Smith is optimistic Weiss can end that problem and is now hoping Gers are able to put together a package to nail down a deal.

I wouldn't be interested in paying a "substantial" fee for a loan though.

Saw the headline on Sporting Life this morning but there wasn't a link or a story.

Must admit he caught my eye in the World Cup but flagged against better opposition.

Wouldn't be that upset if we got him and Barazite in on loan.
