Aberdeen 2 vs. 3 Rangers

On a Champions League week, the last place Rangers would have taken to visit would have been Pittodrie, especially when their midweek opponents were given special dispensation to play on the Friday to give them an extra two days rest.

Walter didn't look to be gazing that far ahead though as he sent out one of his strongest looking sides into a game that was always going to be tough. And so it proved after Rangers, notoriously slow starters, continued that theme. Aberdeen didn't have too much of the possesion but they were the more clinical with it as after thirty minutes they had two atacks and had scored two goals. A mix up in midfield allowed Aberdeen possesion and wen Bougherra was caught on his heels, the offside trap was broken and Vernon was clear through on McGregor to score the first. Slack defending again as Aberdeen broke down the right saw an early cross past Whittaker and once again Bougherra was hesitant in clearing the ball, maybe after his own goal last week, as he let it go only for Maguire to nip in front of Weir to slide home the second.

How many does it take to spark Rangers into life? Well today it was those two as Rangers went on the assault after that and a penalty was awarded as Weiss broke into the box and was taken out cynically by Diamond who proceeded to shove the young Slovakian back down to the ground. Mr, I'm not biased, Collum decide their wasn't much in it and revelled in the chance to just book Diamond and Naismith who got caught up in the afters. The penalty was a stonewaller thankfully and Miler stepped up to hammer the ball down the middle and haul Rangers back into the game.

The second half saw a different Rangers side emerge as they went on the offensive from the start and it took just seven minutes before Davis broke down the left and with the outside of his boot, curled a pass right into the feet of Miller who just doesn't miss at the moment and sealed another double. Rangers job still wasn't done though as two two was still a bad result, even at Pittodrie, and it was Jelavic who secured the three points. It was a bit of oppertunist play as Bougherra pu thteball over the top for Naismith who broke the offside line and went through on goal but with complete unselfish play, he slid the ball across for Jelavic to fire the ball home and gain a win from a ground that has been a bogey for too long.

The fight wasn't quite out of the game and Rangers sat back a bit in the last quarter of the game, trying to see it out and hit on the counter and it was a good break by Naismith again that drew the ful that got Maguire sent off. That last few minutes were seen off and Rangers soared back to the top of the table.

RM’s verdict:

McGregor: - 6 Not to blame for either goal and didn't have much to do otherwise.

Whittaker: - 4 Struggled after a couple of early head knocks and was taken off in the first half.

Bougherra: - 5 A poor first half by the usually superb defender. Made two bad choices in tight situations that contributed to the goals.

Weir: - 7 Tied the defence together and looked composed throughout.

Papac: - 6 Tried to push forward and gotinto some decent positions. Unlucky with a header that tested the keeper.

Naismith: - 8 Superb outing by thew wee man today as he tracked back and pushed forward in equal measures. Great unselfish play to lay on the winer.

Davis: - 5 Not his best in the center but still managed to carve out some chances and laid Millers second on a plate. Worryingly taken off with a slight hamstring strain.

McCulloch: - 8 Had a commanding game in the middle and was up for the battle when battling was required.. Hastled and harried all afternoon.

Weiss: - 6 Looked dangerous in flashes and made a good direct run to win the penalty to start our resurrgence.

Jelavic: - 8 Has a lot to his game and doesn't mind putting himself about. Held the ball up well and will be thrilled to seal the win.

Miller: - 8 Just on blistering form at the moment. Doule figures at this stage in the season is quite a feat.

Subs:-

Broadfoot: - 5 Came on for Whittaker and looked a bit dodgy in defence. Gets into good forward postions if he could control his final ball.

Edu: - 5 Took over from Davis in central midfield and helped see the game out.

davis 5? i thought he was immense

1st half i thoght davis was non existant but after telling other bears that i wish he would rediscover last seasons form, i thought that he was great in the 2nd half before he got took off.

What Davis contributed was probably highlighted more when he went off and we seemed to lose that extra spark we had. Possibly his best game in the centre of the park, would rate him around 7 tbh.

I think Kenny Miller got man of the match on tv, but for me it was Naismith, he was immense.

Allan McGregor 6 - Not an awful lot to do, helpless for the Aberdeen goals

Steven Whittaker 4 - Looked like he could have had a decent game, got two knocks to the head and never recovered, subbed in 36 minutes

Madjid Bougherra 6 - Not as convincing as he usually is, but did alright

David Weir 7 - Had his dodgy moments but overall solid

Sasa Papac 7 - Played well, tried to get up the line and nearly scored with a header

Steven Naismith 8 - Immense!

Lee McCulloch 8 - Did well, solid display

Steven Davis 8 - Ran the midfield, made some dangerous runs into the box

Vladimir Weiss 8 - Tricky, gave Aberdeen some problems. Won the penalty and was then assaulted by Zander Diamond

Kenny Miller 9 - Fantastic, two huge goals

Nikica Jelavic 9 - What a player. Great link up play, hugely intelligent, great finish for the winner

Kirk Broadfoot 5 - Did a job

Maurice Edu 5 - On for the injured Davis, on to help steady the ship

Kyle Lafferty 5 - Few nice touches, looks confident now which is good for Rangers and himself, keep it up Kyle!

Ifil took out Weiss for the penalty and then Diamond pushed him when he tried to get up.

Agree though with your grades and comments otherwise.

Excellent reading. I'd give Davis higher than a 5 though. He's coming onto his game and his pass to Miller was fantastic.

Loved this:

Lafferty: - When your looking to calm a fiesty game down and run down the clock peacefully, who better to bring on than Laff...

lol

A 5 for Davis but an 8 for McCulloch? What game were you watching?

McCulloch was wasteful and slow, he kept it simple but he didn't do much atall

Davis was fantastic for me, he constantly wanted the ball, a few slack passes but he completed far more than he didn't. Set up Millers 2nd, great pace shown, composure and a brilliant final pass. Really neat and tidy when in possession. His performance was only bettered by Miller & Jelavic for me

Mcgregor 6 - nothing to do but lucky to get away with kicking out at mcguire, wee things like that are just plain stupidity by an otherwise fantastic keeper.

Whittaker 4 - hadn't got going by the time he took his first blow to the head and didn't recover from the second.

Bougherra 6 - shaky at times but done well to set up Naismith for the third.

Weir 5 - davie has been a tremendous servant for us but he's looking for of a liability with each passing week. His distribution is shocking also.

Papac 5 - another who's distribution let's him down too often. Solid enough defensively today but offered little offensively.

Weiss 7 - done well to draw the penalty and had a few good deliveries along with some poor ones. Always looks dangerous, more so down the right.

Davis 7 - started very sluggish but came into the game in the second half and had a major part in millers excellent second!

McCulloch 6 - again started slowly and too often got in teammates way but he's in there to hassle and put himself about so he done his job fine.

Naismith 9 - has surprised me this season and was instrumental in the second and third goals!his composure and control has improved vastly and he's becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet at present!

Jelavic 8 - still getting to grips with the scottish game but puts himself about tirelessly and scored the all important third goal, looks a player!

Miller 9 - What can you say about king Kenny at the moment? 10 in 6 games is a fantastic return and some of his hold up play was excellent! Great finish for the equaliser And long may it continue!

i thought miller took his goals fantasticlly well, his second even better, after the pass from davis who i though was exceptional, not my motm but still great.

naisy again was excellent, every season i say this is his season, this year im starting to believe it may be

weiss to win the penalty showed what we brought him up here to do, run at players, the 1st time he does it during todays match he wins a penalty,

great show from all the lads and showed the sheep and every other team why we are the champions.
