RANGERS Football Club and its supporters will commemorate those who tragically lost their lives in the 1971 Ibrox Disaster on the 40th anniversary in January.

A special memorial service for the families and friends will be held at Ibrox Stadium on Monday 3rd January at which 66 0,,5~8094173,00.jpgRangers fans who died after the Old Firm derby in 1971 will be remembered.

The 40th anniversary will also be marked on the 2nd January, 2011 with a minute's silence and other tributes at the Old Firm match at Ibrox. Final details will be confirmed in due course.

The Club has been in contact with relatives of those who lost their lives in the disaster and we fully appreciate the support and co-operation we have received from the SPL, Strathclyde Police and Celtic Football Club with regard to the arrangements to mark the anniversary. More details of the memorial service will be confirmed at a later date.

The SPL has confirmed today that the Old Firm derby will take place on Sunday 2nd January at 12.45pm and in accordance with the wishes of many families, the memorial service will be held on January 3.

John Greig, who captained Rangers in the 1971 derby, commented: "The terrible events of 2nd January, 1971 will never be forgotten.

"It was a horrific day for everyone who lost loved ones at the game and they will always be in our thoughts."

Its the right thing to do and the best way to pay tribute, I hate the minutes applause idea and why should we do it to appease anyone else. No doubt we will be accused of being provocative by our enemies but fick them we shouldnt change what we do to suit others.

Hopefully all in the stadium can pay their respects in the correct manner. I'm sure the vast majority of celtc fans will behave themselves impeccably, hopefully they all will.

Whatever they do though, please for fucks sake DO NOT REACT to any non-observance of the silence. Remember what the silence is for and respect it as such.

A minutes silence is definitely the best way to remember that tragic day and pay tribute to the 66 who died. :disappointment:

Typically, a minority of Taigs will probably just use this to show once again their scumbag behaviour. :wanker: Hopefully all will respect. Have to agree with MisterC though, we shouldn't put it off just to suit them.

i will go against the grain here , but ive a feeling that the majority of the fans inside the ground will respect the wishes of the club and relatives.

I'm certain the majority will. If a few choose to disgrace themselves, I hope Rangers supporters will wait until the silence is over before voicing their disgust. And voice it loud.

It should be a silence to remember people who died just going to watch the football like the vast majority of us do each week as do the fans of Liverpool and Bradford remember their fans.

The only time applause is appropriate is for a club legend on an anniversary in the years after their death, ie first year silence, years after that applause.
