Yeah stuff like this is very interesting. Some great teams there on offer no doubt!

I know athletics has moved on since the times of Mr. Struth. But that is in training techniques, sporting technologies etc. The Rangers players in say, the 1920's were no less committed to the 'cause' than the current day players. I would submit, even more so.

Could they 'whip in' a ball like today's players? Probably not. Could they dance up the pitch with the ball at their feet like Brian Laudrup? hmm Maybe yes. Could they be as fierce in the tackle as Richard Gough? Yes. Perhaps more so.

I think it is unfortunate that the great players of years gone by never had the luxury of YouTube where we can remember every pass, every shot, every save, every tackle. They may not have been as technically gifted as today's players (evolution after all), but I will say this. Never, ever doubt their will to win for The Rangers.

So, in summary. Teams like this are usually only picked from the 'ultra-modern' era because of the incredible media now available. But it does not diminish the accomplishments of our past greats.

Cheers.. watp (tu)

This is the best XI I've seen since I first saw Rangers in 1952-3.

Niven, Shearer, Gough, McKinnon, Little

Start again...Woods, Young, Butcher, Little Caldow

Changed my mind...Chris Woods, Captain Cutlass, Caldow, Harold Davis, Ian McColl, Sammy Baird, Billy Stevenson, Ian McMilla...Hmmm! Let me try again...

McGregor, Gary Stevens, Woodburn, Paterson, Robertson

Right! this is it....Goram, Jardine, Gough, Bougherra, Sammy Cox.....

Do you see where I'm coming from with this? and that's not even scratching the surface and my head is nipping already, so I might have to have a confab with Minstral or nvager about this.

You're right of course OZ. See my post if we had YouTube going back to ????. And the same ball, same boots, same training, same food, same kid glove treatment.... The Rangers would destroy Brasil 10-0. lol (tu)

I know which era of player I prefer delamonty...and it's not the mostly overpaid sooky prima donnas that only play for the Rangers today because of the money.

Woods

Jardine

Gough

Butcher

Van Bronckhorst

De Boer

Gascoigne

Laudrup

Johnstone

McCoist

Cooper

Thats pretty close to what I would go with except I'd have Goram and I'd want Ian Durrant in there, possibly instead of De Boer, great player that he was. I get the feeling that with that forward line at it's peak, we wouldn't need a defence!

It's interesting when you see the teams from each individual Bear. I get really disappointed with mine because the only real legend I can think of being in my team is Davie Weir. I've said for the last few months now that in terms of Rangers class (his stature, professionalism, dignity etc) he is up there with the likes of Gough, Greig, Caldow, Shaw, Young and Meiklejohn, but I get disappointed that because of where I live I never got to see my hero's such as Ferguson, Gough, Laudrup and McCoist in the flesh when I was growing up.

For me I grew up on old videos from the 70s, 80s and the occasional tape that was sent over in the 90s or the odd European or Old Firm game that was shown live on TV. For me, I watched a lot of games that were before I was born, like the 70 LC final, 73 SC final, the 4-4 OF game in 86 and the early Souness years, and for me I could put some players I loved from those periods in my team but I can't in this thread as I never got to see them at Ibrox, as a lot was a good 20 odd years before I was born.

One thing I remember my Dad telling me is quite relevant to this thread. For him, the greatest Center half Rangers ever had was Ronnie McKinnon, and he always gives him the number 5 jersey if he is naming his greatest Rangers 11. But one day he said that when he mentioned McKinnon to an older Bear at Ibrox back in the late 60s the older Bear replied that McKinnon wasn't even fit to lace Meiklejohn's boots. Another reminder is that when Cooper and Laudrup got picked in the fans all time 11 in the late 90s there was a comment from someone that said 'two left wingers in the team and they didn't even pick the greatest one of them all - Alan Morton'

All of these teams are personal to each individual and can only be made on players in your own living memory. There are many players from a bygone era who would have been world class in their day.

John McPherson was thought to be the best player in our first half century, Neilly Gibson, who was regarded as the best in the world by his peers, the goalscoring exploits of RC Hamilton or Jimmy Smith.......the list is endless and can only be judged on the tales passed down or from books and newspapers of the time.

Sadly, the HoF is a crock of shit, as far as I'm concerned.

The problem as well for players from older era's is exposure. I'm pretty sure, for instance, that Alan Morton was one of the greatest wingers ever but unlike todays football, we don't have reams and reams of video footage. Or is that a good thing? I wonder how many of the modern team will we look back on in 50 years who will stand up alongside the true greats of the club?

As a very small boy my idol was Colin Stein and then it became Davie Cooper and DJ as I got a bit older. Perhaps it's age as well, because although for sure football is different now, somehow I cant see any of this current side approaching the levels of regard I had for these guys. Or perhaps it's also when you're older you don't have the hero worship thing that blinds you when you're young?

Oh and a good example of this would also come picking the best goal ever scored by a Ranger, because mine would be Bobby Russell's in Eindhoven but whilst there is footage of Coopers amazing strike in the Dryborough Cup somehow I've never seen the Russell goal on utube.

A peculiar selection indeed, given that Goram, Gough, Brown, Greig, Hateley and McCoist achieved more in Europe than Woods, Numan, Mols, De Boer etc ever did for Rangers.

At the opposite end of that, there is the fact that over time memories can become clouded and many of the players bad days can be forgotten. For an example of what I mean a bear in 50 years time might look at Boyd's goal scoring record and conclude that he was every bit as good as McCoist/McPhail/Millar etc when in reality he wasn't. And of the bears alive then old enough to remember Boyd, perhaps we will remember him for his goals more than his poor displays and the fact that he was never really used in the big games.

Although one thing I once read about Ronnie McKinnon that has stuck in my mind was in John Greig's book, when he recalls meeting Franz Beckanbauer at our game against Beyern in 1999. Beckenbauer asked him how McKinnon was "getting on and what was he up to these days?" Greig said he was surprised and asked why he would like to know, and Beckanbauer replied "I just remembered him from when we played you as a brilliant centre half, and just wondered how he was." That is of course paraphrased from the book, and not the complete quote, but the gist of it. I thought though that it is a very, very good compliment to McKinnon and gives an indication to a younger bear like me of how good he was, if a legend of the game like Beckanbauer says that about him.
