Bannan dont call me Jinky, Xavi or Iniesta

Scotland's latest national hero today shrugged off comparisons with Jinky Johnstone, Xavi and Andres Iniesta and declared he wants to make his mark simply as Barry Bannan.

The 20-year-old, who marked his international debut with a man-of-the-match performance in Scotland's 3-0 dismantling of the Faroe Islands at Pittodrie, has drawn the compliments from highly impressed manager Craig Levein and captain Darren Fletcher.

But the Aston Villa midfielder insisted the unprecedented build-up did not affect his preparation and will not be a burden to him in future.

Buoyant Bannan smiled and said: "I don't really pay any attention to that talk about Jinky, Xavi or Iniesta. I just go out there and try to play my own game.

"I go out on the pitch, don't get nervous, and, hopefully, the fans take to to me, the manager takes to me and the fans take to me.

"I don't really compare myself to anyone else. If I was to compare myself to anyone, it would not be the ones mentioned.

"People probably don't know me that well in Scotland as I've been in England all my career. Hopefully, that has changed a little now."

Along with Danny Wilson another one of the seven players handed their first caps last night Airdrie-born Bannan grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

He tormented and teased the frustrated Faroees who struggled to contain him throughout a terrific opening half in which Scotland scored their goals, Bannan setting up the third with a great cross headed down by Wilson for Jamie Mackie to shoot home.

Levein went as far as to say the fans have now seen a glimpse of the future in the form of Bannan, and the youngster aims to use this performance as a launch pad for much more of the same.

The diminutive starlet was delighted at the way he and Wilson rose to the challenge. He said: "I'd like to think we've merited the manager's faith in us. I hope we've put in strong displays.

"As it was my first cap, I tried to prove a point to the manager and the fans. It's hard to say if I've done enough to get into contention for the Euro qualifiers.

"They're still a long way away and there were a lot of call-offs last night. All I can do is go back to Aston Villa and do my best for them. If I can put in strong displays and stay in the team, then hopefully I can get called up again."

How fucking deluded can people get? The lads good but fucking hell hes not that good

Not sure who has been comparing him to those players ability wise, what I did hear being mentioned by various people is that he is similar in height and physique to those players and it didnt hinder them in any way.

Yeh, I think that's more what people are getting at - I don't think even the UK media stupid enough to say he's as good as Iniesta and Xavi!

Also, it is more impressive that he has been playing well in the EPL against the likes of Man Utd as opposed to him playing well against the Faroe Islands, although his attributes were there for all to see.

Tbh mate the tims have the korean Gerrard in Ki so its possible they meant literally.

Also when they signed Mccourt he could do things Ronaldinho could only dream of. So it is possible the media believe this shite

Although obviously not on the same scale, the lad is some player. But typically players will get over-hyped. Happened with Fleck not too long ago as well.

Clearly not related, but once again your avatar is a topper.

Barry Bannan is under one of the best coaches he could possibly find.

Lots of managers follow the line of it's up to the talented kid to find a way of fitting into the team, whereas Houllier's philosophy is to find a way for the team to fit the talented kid in.

He played a massive role in bringing through Frances' Golden Generation and I fully expect we will see a number of prospects coming through at Villa during his tenure.

Even though Albrighton broke through a bit earlier, he looks brilliant and can only get better under Houllier.

Ciaran Clark is good as well.
