The BBC and Sky Sports will broadcast Formula 1 in the UK between 2012 and 2018 under a new rights deal.

The BBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of F1 in the UK since 2009 but its contract with Formula One Management was due to expire after the 2013 season.

Sky Sports will show every race, qualifying session and practice live.

BBC Sport will broadcast half the races live, as well as the qualifying and practice sessions from those races.

Both companies will broadcast in high definition.

Races screened by the BBC will be live on the BBC Sport website for UK users.

The BBC will have highlights on TV, online and mobile for any race it it is not showing live, and all races will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live.

Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC.

"The sport has never been more popular with TV audiences at a 10-year high and the BBC has always stated its commitment to the big national sporting moments.

"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence-fee payers."

Races shown live on BBC TV will include the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Monaco GP and the concluding race of the season.

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: "This is fantastic news for F1 fans and Sky Sports will be the only place to follow every race live and in HD.

"We will give F1 the full Sky Sports treatment with a commitment to each race never seen before on UK television."

I just dont understand it, that race on sunday had 4 million viewers thats the highest viewed programme on a sunday for the beeb. I think their coverage is top class the fact you can watch a whole race uninterrupted is brilliant. Just think back to when itv had it, it was embarrassing the amount of breaks they tried to shoe horn in and it was detrimental to your viewing.

What really worries me is who is sky going to poach from the beeb, brundle is a certainty that means that burd wil be commenting for the beeb. Thats what happened in a race last season when brundle couldn't do it.

brundle makes the programme what it is you can talk about jake all you want i always find him a bit ''awkward''

Its a fcuking crying shame the coverage is absolutely first class but its all down to money i suppose, said on newsbeat the beeb had been criticised for spending money on getting the f1, id like to know by who and why.

Once again sky fucking over the average punter! Anything popular they get their claws into! Not happy about this, hope next season goes back to

It being a boring precession with no overtaking and the viewing figures plumet.

How can the BBC claim this is a positive for them? Fast running out of reasons to keep paying the licence fee!

Apart from F1 the only good thing on BBC is Top Gear. It won't be long until they fucking cancel that to make room for a special Sunday version of The One Show. Fucking pretentious pricks.

I have Sky Sports but this pisses me off. Same with all the golf now being shown on Sky instead of BBC! One day they will get the World Cup, European Championships, The Olympics, The Open and Wimbledon and be able to charge whatever the fuck they want because its stuff we will want to see.

Former driver John Watson told Sky Sports News what viewers can look forward to as Formula One comes to Sky Sports.

"The race will be from lights to flag advert free."

John WatsonQuotes of the week

Sky Sports announced on Friday morning that they along with the BBC, have been awarded the live rights to Formula One between 2012 and 2018. The move will bring increased choice, innovation and breadth of coverage to UK and Irish motor racing fans.

The broadcasting partnership includes all races, qualifying and practice sessions live on Sky Sports across TV, Online and mobile and tablet devices.

And Watson, who was part of the commentary team when Sky and F1 digital plus covered the Grand Prix in 2002, was quick to assure fans that their Formula One pleasure would not be spoilt by adverts.

"Don't have any is the answer, said Watson on Sky Sports News.

"The race will be from lights to flag advert free."

Watson is delighted with the news and believes that F1 will get the full Sky Sports treatment.

"I got the call this morning and thought I had gone back nine years," added an excited Watson.

"In 2002 Sky and F1 digital plus covered every Grand Prix at the level that I would expect to see Sky Sports do in 2012.

"As far as I am concerned you cannot have enough coverage, but you also want quality coverage.

"The audience wants more information and more understanding. They want to know exactly what is going on and I would love to see the availability of putting cameras into team HQ's at race track to understand what is going on.

"There is so much that hasn't yet been provided to the audience and the more you give them then the more they will enjoy it. F1 is a sport that never stops and I would like to think that the future is very powerful."

Well, we wait n see ,

A quote from that auld bastard bernie

May 2011

''Sky have been trying to buy the Tv rights from us for a long time, but we won't because they are not free to-air broadcasters. With their viewing figures it would be almost impossible for teams to find sponsors. That would be suicidal ''

You're full of shit Ecclestone

A lot of great comments on the head of the bbc f1 blog, the guy is getting it tight royally!

Great race, lewis threw it away on tyre choice though. You could just see it slipping through his fingers. Button ran out comfortable winner despite what vettel said in the press conference. Note to vettel you cannae overtake to save yourself no way on this earth would you have passed button.

Also need to applaud mcclarn again letting your drivers race each other is brilliant viewing even if you have your heart in your mouth.

What about that Renault exploding though some freaky shit there

The side of the car certainly made a mess.

Hope the marshal that appeared to get hit in the leg by either carbon fibre or engine part is okay as well. Although I'm sure we would have heard if not.

So what did we all think of Schumacher's defence on Hamilton today?

Personally i thought it was outstanding although there was one point i was shouting at the tele . ''THATS 2 FUCKING MOVES''

I thought he was very close to whats right and whats wrong but apparently McLaren made no complaint to the stewards so they must have thought it was fair.

I also watched the spa race again today and i have come to the wild conclusion that Jenson Button is the best ''racer'' in the field. 53 competitive overtakes this season has shown me with my hamilton blinkers on that Button is far superior of the 2.

Title all but over but im still enjoying the races.

Didn't have a problem with Schumacher's defending. Forced Hamilton on to the grass but it wasn't illegal and Hamilton done the exact same thing to Timo Glock at Monza in 2008 so fuck him.

Button's class and well better than Hamilton. Button's overtaking has been immense but in a McLaren he shouldn't have to do so many overtakes as they should be further up the field to begin with.

Vettel, Alonso and Button are the 3 top drivers in the sport now.
