He hasn’t featured since, but he has been instructed to bulk up in order to anchor the Rangers rearguard in future. The 19-year-old said: “It’s been a season of firsts for me. I’ve just joined the Scotland Under-21 squad for the first time, and I made my debut against Bursaspor in Turkey a couple of months ago.Following that game, the management spoke to me about building myself up and getting bigger and stronger, so I’ll get more chances to play. “I’ve been working as hard as I can in the gym, and, hopefully, it will pay off. There’s a sports scientist there so there’s no way you can cheat as you are always under supervision.”So guys what's your thoughts??

If the lad is comfortable playing in that position, it makes sense to have a plan for him next season. If it doesn't work, he can move back to the R/B position if need be.Obviously the management team have saw something in him at training, to have this plan in place.I hope he succeeds. Amac9 2,060
Was not overly impressed with him in Bursaspor. So we will see a Darren Cole-David Weir partnership next season...
Davie2909 21
Looked a good player against Bursaspor hopefully he gets a few games in the SPL that will only make him better
1st_Jan_1994 4,868
Didn't like what I seen of him. Reminded me of Alan Lowing.Still, I don't want to be harsh on the lad. It was just one game. Could have a big future with us if developed right.
Bluepeter9 5,167
I dont see anything in the article saying he is being groomed to play center half next season - it says add bulk and you may get a few more games ? The future does not nessessarily mean next season.
broxibear87 129
He says in the record today that ''they want me to play centre half, thats why I need to bulk up''
skinnymate1690 772
Wonder why because from what I seen he was a lot better going forward than defending. But obv managment will know best and see him everyday ,On a side note - I think perry should be allowed to find another club though because he clearly doesn't have a future with us
ManchestGer 351
I'd like to see more of him, what's the deal with Perry these days?
jcb 1,167
Personally think Ross Perry is a far better prospect at centre-back or even right-back.
BILL.I.AM 18
We could do with a few more youths pushing for a1st team place.
RyanMac 185
The boy has to get a grip of his attitude first. Everyone thought Fleck was bad, Cole is notorious within MP for partying, thinks hes hit the big time already.
jcb 1,167
We could do with a few more youths pushing for a1st team place. Will only happen under a new manager. Should only happen if they are good enough.
Guest SandyWATP
The sort of activity I'd expect from the unwashed.
Muff 245
Guy's like Darren Cole should be out on loan playing most weeks. The squad really isn't that small, and he's hardly going to be on the bench. As McCoist said yesterday. We have got that strength in depth nowEven if it's a short-term loan deal, month by month or with a re-call option clause... If players like Darren Cole are the future, then they should be playing at the age of 19 - whether it's with The Rangers or someone like Partick Thistle. MillwallLoyal 284
A Cole / Perry centre back pairing will be a decent back up for Broadfoot & Papac next season.
Muff 245
SCOTLAND Under-21 new boy Darren Cole yesterday revealed that he is being groomed to play at centre-half for Rangers next season.Cole made his debut at right-back for the Ibrox club in the 1-1 draw with Bursaspor in a dead-rubber Champions League game back in December. He hasn't featured in the first team since, but he has been instructed to bulk up in order to anchor the Rangers rearguard in the 2011/11 campaign.Cole, 19, said: ""It's a season of firsts for me. I've just joined the Scotland Under-21 squad for the first time, and I made my debut for Rangers against Bursaspor in Turkey a couple of months ago."Following that game, the management at Rangers spoke to me about building myself up and getting bigger and stronger, so I'll get more chances to play."I've been working as hard as I can in the gym, and hopefully it will pay off. There's a sports scientists there so there's no way you can cheat as you're always under supervision."Edinburgh-born Cole was a shock choice to line up against the Turkish champions and he admitted he didn't even get the opportunity to worry about it adding : "I only got told I was playing in the Champions League a few hours before the game so I didn't have time to be nervous."As soon as I touched the ball a couple of times I was fine. The management were saying after the game that I could still play right-back, but they want me to play centre-half, and that's why I have to bulk up."They're looking at next season for me now so I just have to get as much playing experience as possible in the meantime, and hopefully I can get some game time with the Under-21s in our bounce games this week."I think I'll end up at centre-back but I prefer right-back or even left-back, as you're getting on the ball more and you can influence the game more."http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/227925/Is-Darren-Cole-being-groomed-to-replace-Weir-and-Boughera-/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
deleteduser1 169
Best of luck to the lad Cole.Looks a very good prospect Agree with Muff he should be loaned out to a small club to get first team experience.
nvager 498
He looked rather small for a CH. How tall is he?He also looked very light in weight. Looked to me a bit frail for a CH, but hopefully I am wrong.
Muff 245
He's 9 ft 10 in, but that hasn't stopped the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, Nasief Morris, Carles Puyol, Roberto Ayala, Juan, Thomas Vermaelen... from being top class centre-backs.
disgruntled_bear 157
From what we have seen of him, the boy has potential. He decent with both feet and has a good spring on him. I can see why we would want him to switch to CB.
