At the age of fifteen, McCarthy opted to play for the Republic of Ireland;[11] he was eligible through his family links to Annagry, County Donegal, and he made a promise to his dying grandfather to do so.[12][13] However, McCarthy also claimed that he would have played for Scotland if they had offered him an international call-up first.[11] Despite multiple attempts to persuade McCarthy to switch his allegiance to the country of his birth, he reaffirmed his decision to play for the Republic of Ireland.[13][14]

Think that above is all you need to know....he won't switch!

McCarthy received his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland national squad in February 2010, for a friendly with Brazil played in London.[21] He made his debut as a substitute, replacing Stoke City's Liam Lawrence after 70 minutes.[22]

I don't think a friendly game counts anymore you are only now declared for your country when you play in a competitive game, so in theory he could switch back

I think this is true.

Think your right. Thiago Motta switched to Italy not long ago, even though he had a friendly for Brazil under his belt

I'd rather see a born and bred Scot like McCarthy represent us than someone like Commons. He was 15 when he made his original decision, and it was his dying grandfather's wish by the look of things.....can anyone honestly say they can't understand why he made his choice back then?

I would reluctantly take him back if he decided he wanted to play for Scotland. He's starting to look good at Wigan.

But Trap 'o toni will prob bring him off the bench in the next qualifier's and that'll be the end of it.

Well if as a young boy who didn't know any better he had his entire family piling pressure onto him to play for ROI and has now realised it would be a mistake and wants to play for the country of his birth rather than that of his grandfathers then I dont have a problem with this.

Of course friendly games count.

He can't play for Scotland anymore, he's an ROI international now.

nope they dont count

he can switch if he wants to

and if levein can convince him to then fucking go for it, he looks like he could become better than fletcher and most other mid we have at our disposal
