Weir bug has Gers in crisis

Recommended Posts

RANGERS have a defensive crisis for tonight after Davie Weir took ill.

The veteran Ibrox skipper complained of a stomach bug within hours of touching down in Portugal.

Weir, 40, was holed up in his room and missed training at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

Boss Walter Smith is now planning for the tie without his experienced stopper.

He was considering a five-man defence but those plans may now be scrapped.

On-loan Arsenal starlet Kyle Bartley could be asked to play at the back, with Sasa Papac another option.

Ricky Foster will again be in the frame after starting last week's 1-1 first leg.

Gers are already without Lee McCulloch, Kirk Broadfoot and Stevie Naismith. Nikica Jelavic is ineligible, Jamie Ness stayed home for treatment on a groin injury, and Kyle Hutton is also ill.

Smith will have to pack the bench with kids tonight and Rangers then face a hectic schedule with games in FOUR competitions over the next three weeks.

Personally I think this is a cover story so Walter can drop him without Weir losing face, either way it's about time he was dropped.

Papac mentioned it earlier in a interview, that it was a back 5 in our usual European tactic. Personally I think we would have had no choice with Weir in to set up any different.

Now with him looking like he's out, we can set up in a 4 and push the defensive line up. (tu)
