David Holmes: I always wondered had he stayed

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about the great work David Holmes did for us, he revolutionised the club, I jus wondered if he had have stayed and Lawrence Malborough held his stake in the club and didnt sell to Murray, how we would have evolved as a club. Would we still have managed to get 9 in a row, get the Laudrups and Gazzas, we really were on the up big time and i dont think it would have been beyond us. We were pretty much playing to full houses when he was still the Chairman, which was 44,000 then.

Just a thought really that comes to mind now and again.....

Holmes deserves massive credit for the vision he had for The Rangers, but it was always just a temporary measure in order to sell the club as Marlborough had lost all interest.

He gets all my credit, he was behind the revolution, for me too many poeple forget the importance of his role. He didnt actually want the job but was pretty much told to do it, and a great job he did (tu)

I will second that.

Marlborough had no interest in Rangers after inheriting the shares and saw it as a millstone and a burden.

As you say Holmes sole task when being recruited was to awaken the giant that is Rangers..which he did when appointing Souness and then find a buyer for Marlboroughs shares which he did along with the help of Souness.

The first 10 years were good but as history shows the last 10 years under Murray have been terrible...and that is nothing to do with winning leagues and trophies.

You may have already seen this and it may not be especially enlightening but this documentary has lots of interview clips with Holmes in which he vaguely outlines his own vision and future at the club.

I still have that on VHS when it was on tv after we won the league in 87. I have to say the quality is crap though, its much better on youtube, thats why i downloaded it and nicely put it all together ages ago (tu)
